Gmoe
-I'm on 90W near Albany, going about 85-88mph in the left lane with traffic all around, speed limit is 65. -I see a NY state trooper going the opposite direction hit his brakes pretty hard in my rear view. -I find a spot in traffic in the right lane and slow down to like 75 and open my sunroof shade. (It makes my tint appear lighter) -About a minute later.. he's on my tail with lights all aglow and I pull over. -I pull WAY over to the right, roll all my windows down, turn off the engine and put both my hands on the wheel, way up high where he can see them from a mile away and don't remove them, even when talking to him. -Officer asks me the usual "do you know why I pulled you over story", I say no. -He tells me it's for my tint, too dark, can't have front windows blah blah. I say I bought the car that way and haven't removed it yet. (Total BS..) -He then kind of hesitates what he's saying, does a walkaround of my car, like he's checking it out... he backs away a little as if to get a better look at it and looks it up and down etc. "Why look at my wheels, I think to myself, what could possibly be illegal or legally wrong there..." I have illegal tint, no front plate, tinted tail lights, cleared directionals and was just going nearly 90mph. All pretty illegal in NY I think. He didn't even ask for my license or registration or anything. He then says... "Eh.. I'm not gonna bust your balls, have a nice day." I just sat there in shock...then... yesssssssssss!! do the chicken dance in the car alone. I swear it could have been one of those "love" Subaru commercials. -or more likely it was just that I was courteous, but I like to think the ever amazing LGT saved me a ticket by just looking hot that day and he was a car guy. RedDawg
so you're the one that's using up all the good luck with NYS troopers. I get tagged at least 50% of the time when i head up to buffalo a few times a year. And always for stupid speeds like 5mph over the limit or no front plate and i have to explain that PA doesn't issue a front plate and then i get to sit there for 45min while he "runs my license" and prob jerks off to internet porn in his cruiser. ehsnils
See it this way - tint is likely to be used by ricers and those that has something to hide (drug trafficking or so...). He probably decided that you didn't have something to hide. The tint was the excuse needed to stop you. Or he was actually out looking for a car similar to your that had been involved in something. The point is - avoid attracting cops with the look of your car. Being that anonymous Japanese car is an advantage - just blend in at the parking lot or in the traffic flow. What you have under the hood - that's a different issue.

I got stopped for no front plate and tint in CT and once the cop looked over my record he just came back and said you know whats illegal get it fixed and sent me on my way. I don't think he really wanted to bother busting my balls if it wasn't necessary. This was in my Beretta with 5% all the way around, and the MR PINK license plate lol NY law IIRC is 70%VLT MIN... so really if you were to test it, you can't have any tint on the fronts at all. Gmoe
Yea, I'm not complaining or trying to bitch about being stopped for "nothing". I admit I have some illegal shit going on..minor, but enough to get some attention. But no, nothing to hide otherwise. 35% tint all around. I don't want to look like every other generic Japanese car. So attention I will get... ah well. Racial profiling?? Only if he was profiling, generic looking middle class white guy.
Power4
I never really have a problem with the troopers on the New York Thruway when I'm driving the LGT or my Mustang so I've always thought they were pretty nice. The only time I got a ticket I was driving a Taurus so maybe they only want to bust non car enthusiasts?
B-BGTLimited
35% tint all around. LOL you have that light of tint and you open your sunroof screen to lighten it... Just Imagine with my 5% on the Beretta... its like painted on black paint hahaha I'm planning on doing the LGT with 35% up front and 20% in the rear when I go to do it. Just to keep the front windows 100% legal for CT and hopefully eliminate the random pullovers. The tinting shop that did the Beretta down in Norwich said when they were done they parked the car around back so it wouldn't draw any attention from the cops. RJS5689
A similar thing happened to me when I was driving through Mass on the Mass Pike with my GTI. A Mass state trooper stopped me for my exhaust, then walked around the car commenting about it being lowered, the wheels, various cosmetic mods, ETC. He then asked me if my record was clean, I said yes. We shot the shit about cars for a few minutes then he even told me how to better hide my radar detector because he said, "not all cops are as nice as me". He then told me to have a good day and sent me on my way. I was pretty dumbfounded by my luck that day.

LMAO Yep.. it's still illegal, so regardless I open the shade when I see cops around. Ridiculous, but it really makes the tint look legal with it open if the sun is out. 5%.. You might as well just put black vinyl over the windows.

RJS5689
Most factory tint is 67%, I don't know of any 3% window film. Why would you need a 3% film? The higher the number, the more light that passes through. If factory "tint" is really 67%, that would make them illegal in New York considering NY requires we have 70% of light pass through.
B-BGTLimited
correct, this is a huge debate on a few other sites. Most windows from the factory will always test around 70% VLT so that means 70% of the light gets through from the outside. If the windows stock were 67% then yes you could say that its illegal from the factory. This is why I think tint laws are obnoxious and they don't know what they are talking about in some states. There is one that says your car has to have 100% VLT... that would technically mean no window period since all come with about a 25%-30% block already. Also I've spoken with someone else who said their car tested way lower than the 20% film the put on the car and they couldn't figure out why, but the same thing applies... Take 100 Lumens, pass that through a stock 70% VLT window, you get 70 lumnes on the other side, now pass that through a 20% VLT film, you end up with 14 lumens left... so when he said it was 20% film and it tested out at 14.5%VLT... Thats about right for stock windows with tint on them. This same deal puts all cars in CT who get 35% VLT film illegal since you cant buy 50% film level at normal tint shops. That's the only way I can see getting to the 35% VLT transfer that they want.

Damn buddy, good luck with that. I got busted for a 55 in a 30 when I was 16, which thankfully got dropped to a failure to yield. Then a year later I got busted for 76 in a 50 which was thankfully dropped to a parking ticket. My "connects" I am no longer close with so I need to be careful now. Osei
You need a real lawyer, anything else won't work. +1 By Law in NY State, troopers are not allowed to plea bargain. The DA assigned can, but they are not very amenable to much. You need a lawyer. The Putnam county cop can plea provided the town has counsel. I say that because the town of Deerpark in Orange cty for budgetary reasons does not have an ada on call,so any state issued summons can't even be downgraded. Get a better radar detector and be prepared for that driver assessment fee the state will eventually charge you. O.

Kylar
You guys are a bit off on the factory tint(for legacy's anyways), its usually very very light. for example I got my car tinted with 35% all around and my front windows came in at 32% at the DMV. The tint in the glass only lowered it by 3%. The back windows were 5% darker at 30%
