Whit's hid retrofit

Recommended Posts

What's up everyone! Finally decided to retrofit my oem headlamps with some goodies from the retrofit source. At first I was just gonna throw some 5000k halogens in with my Eagle Eye U-Bars to match the LED color, but of course, I was immediately flamed in a good way which discouraged me from doing so. It's HID or nothing as the saying goes :)! Gonna be a slow process as I this is a sneak job so wife doesn't know (anti car mod nazi) but I love her to death.

Here are the goodies:

As I go through the process, I will let everyone know what goodies I decided to go with and some how too's. Also, may have some questions, maybe many for the experts on here too. Here goes, wish me luck!!!

Oh yeah, I get a day off during the week as the wifey is at work. The good thing about this project is I am in no rush to get things done. I want it perfect from the prepping, to the painting, to the fitment and little tid bits here and there such as what to do with the marker lens, turn signal lens, DRL's etc...

Well, started disassembling the lamps in preparation for the nerve racking bake

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/11/24/8a116c51ca3ca64859e86376a2dc4257.jpg

Pretty straight forward here but don't forget the 3 torx bit screws holding the lens on so you can separate after bake. I think it was a 15 torx bit. I removed everything including wiring harness, rubber surround for projector and neatly secured for later.

-Made sure the lamps fit and just made it

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/11/24/d2a51380326048b95471bcd0042a9de0.jpg

-I took out lamps and let oven preheat to 270

-Threw the first one in and said a prayer

-Baked mine for 8 minutes (some say 7 but just wanted to make sure) glad I did!

-Removed from oven with gloves and used a larger flat head and started prying at a corner

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/11/24/5f5bc65ef5aa76fe8ba7738df91cb588.jpg

-As I was prying I was making sure the little tabs were disconnected for ease of removal. Also not to brake them.

-Slowly worked around the edge prying little by little with flat head to where I could finally get a good grip to pull apart very slowly.

- I let them them cool down for final removal of the guts, oem projector, side marker and turn signal reflector

Fairly straight forward dissection, nothing broke or got burnt ;)

Enough for one day as wife should be home any minute. Back to your home lamps, see you again soon...http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/11/24/3bdfa294a292abd2449ecb0e716c5101.jpg

What projector you going with? That halogen projector front end looks identical Maxima HID projector with black series lens might a perfect fit.

I replaced the bowls on mine with LHD Maxima ones. Same Koito projector IMO (just the rotation is a bit off on mine).

Good work on the write-up. Interested on the brackets and how they fit/could be adapted.

Just curious. Morimoto seems to have a new version H1 7.0. Did you get the 6.0 or 7.0?

H1 7.0 just goes on sale today at 11am, so most likely not. Black friday deal start Monday.

They got the best BF deal ever, you get two set of free LEDS see their Black Friday flyier.

Too bad I just placed three orders with TRS last week and yesterday.

Did you claim two set of free leds? T10 for the license plate and the 3156 MORIMOTO XB LED BULBS probably not useful for the legacy but that's a nice $30-40 worth there.

It's so hard to resist a Morimoto MiniH1 setup for the Fozz, especially since it just has big ugly reflector halogens.

So, contemplating what to do with the oranges in the headlamp (marker and turn signal).

First option:

To permanently remove the side marker reflectors or will it look funny as it will leave a hole.

2nd option:

I wouldn't want to completely black them out as I think that would look awful, so use night shades or rustoleum spray tint and darken it to preferred liking.

I think for the turn signal orange reflector, I would either use this same technique with the spray or use vinyl. Thoughts???
