Not sure if this is right could be something else.

Anyway so it could be something other than the tranny but any time I put it in reverse I hear a bump in the rear. I had a mechanic claim to fix it once before. Said a tranny mount was broken and he welded it. But since it came back I wonder if it's the rear differential. Could it be going or maybe just a mount on it broke too.

I don't even know what could break mounts. I don't go off roading or anything.

Is the car an automatic ?

A clunking noise when putting it in gear is normally the U joint is going bad.

Weld the tranny mount...yea...right... I would get under the car and look at that ???

Not sure. I had a 98 GT wagon, 5 speed, a 00 GT wagon 5 speed, and have one of the few 05 GT wagon 5 speeds.

Something makes me think rear diff bushings

Finally got it checked out and this seems to be the case. Here's a pic of the bushings. It's hard to see from the angle but they're completely cracked through and the center with the bolt is basically free floating in there.

If a mod can move this to another forum where it can get the proper attention now that I know it's not my transmission that'd be great.

Now I'm wondering if this is something I can replace myself or does the entire rear end need to be removed to replace them?

Just need to replace those bushings.

The differential needs to be removed, but there should be sufficient room to get in there with a bushing removal tool set.

Well, the bushings clearly need to be replaced, and I find it funny nobody mentioned anything about the diff leaking like a siv, lol. God knows if any fluid is even left in there.

I was just about to bring up the leaky diff cover.

how difficult and expensive is that kit? I'm assuming if there's an easy to follow guide I might do it myself. The problem is I don't have a garage or flat spot to work on the car unless I pull it out into the culdesac.

Also what can be done about the leaky differential? Is it easy to top it off or do I need to have it opened up, checked properly, and refilled at the dealership?

You need to find a local garage that people trust, and take the car there.

Both. Having a safe place to work is the number one requirement when doing automotive repairs.

There are a half a dozen bolts holding the rear diff in the car.

You can unbolt the diff, and leave it on the ground, just don't turn it upside down (or fluid will gush out of the vent tube).

Then you can jack up the car and try to get those bushings out and new ones in.

I'd also drain the rear diff, then unbolt the rear cover. Clean the mating flanges really well, and apply some Permatex Gray to reseal the diff. Let it cure for a couple of hours, then reinstall and refill.
