'06 LGT 5EAT for my wife...mod time!

Recommended Posts

I'm no noob to the subaru world...but this is the first legacy I've owned. My wife bought it while I was deployed, and I'm proud of her for choosing this one. It's much better than the Accord she used to own. Me being the good husband I am...I've decided to modify it a little. I'm selling my WRX, so I have some leftover parts from trades/part out. My wife doesn't like doing the wrenching, but I also don't like anyone else wrenching on my stuff.

After I started parting mine out, I went ahead and gave her my wheel/tire setup. It needed some coilovers and a roll/pull.

I ended up buying the coilovers from SubieChik, and added a lip. Here's where the good looks come in. I love 4th gens.

Right now I'm tearing it down to finally make some power. Yesterday was finishing up the front suspension with a sway bar and strut tower bar. I bought both used for a great price. On a sad note...the rust under this car is ridiculous. Every exhaust bolt is a PITA.

A before picture with almost nothing done to it.

Yeah, my daughter grabs anything she can reach on the counter. Lol

I'm cut short due to daddy duty, but I got the exhaust manifold off. This corrosion is killing me. The air/fuel sensor is STUCK. Luckily I have a spare from my 08 wrx...so that's not really a problem. This evening all of the exhaust and turbo should be out of the car.

Made a good bit if progress today. Killer B oil pickup tube was first on the list, and I now know why I pushed it off this far. That was not fun.

I did a little bit of heat-wrapping and test fitting too.

Also the header and up-pipe are in there. The turbo is in, but waiting on a new oil feed line. I went ahead and mocked up the inlet and intake to make sure everything was working together.

I'll be cleaning things up and routing all the vacuum lines for the grimmspeed 3-port tomorrow after work. My samco hoses got back-ordered...so that's a bust. Oh well...time to get creative.

Today's update is boring...it's all tedious stuff now. I installed the Perrin coolant overflow tank that I had left over from the wrx. The cusco catch can was tricky. I'll be running to Lowe's this weekend to get new hoses, but these will do for now. The biggest issue was running the Grimmspeed 3-port boost controller. I think I figured it out, but the evap system and purge valve are confusing. It's different from the 08 wrx setup. Oh well...I'll get it all eventually.

Don't mind the mess of vacuum hoses and coolant hoses. It's a work in progress...

Today was fun...

I got the downpipe in first. I noticed my turbo oil return line was kinked, so I fixed that before I destroyed everything. With that done I started to fab up the intercooler setup. It's coming along nicely. I'm working a little slow since the Cobb doesn't come in until Monday. Hopefully I'll be starting her up once it gets here. Almost done...

Phil at DIA Automotive hopefully. If that falls through I'll use Dan at Mach V. Dan tuned my wrx for me and it held together for 8 months with no issues. Phil is currently working to get the software issue worked out for his shop, but he's tuned a few cars in the area already with good results. I'm still waiting for the Cobb to come in. Tracking info says it should be here monday.

I'm only looking to crack 300whp. 301whp would make me more than happy. Here in Virginia most people don't go past stock fueling stage 2, so they're looking at 280whp-290whp. Once the valve body is in, my wife shouldn't have a problem with keeping up. :)

The Cobb was part of the trade-in program they're doing. I was selling my V2 out of the wrx, so for $325 more I could just trade up to a nice V3 for the wife. It's nice being able to monitor multiple things in the same screen. I had no intentions of being on an OTS map from Cobb except for the initial startup and limp over to the dyno.

Makes sense. It's one of the better tools to confirming boost levels and data logging.

I've learned the hard way at 4500 feet there aren't many boost gauges that work properly :(

Update:

Car is running and ready for a tune. Only had a little oil leak from the turbo's feed line, but that's fixed now. I've talked to the guys at DIA Automotive, and they are flying in Tim Bailey from Cobb Tuning. They needed a few cars to tune, so this car will be one of them. I'll be posting the numbers up when I get them.

For now, here's an exhaust clip.

Fuel pump is swapped out. I also took some time to clean everything up. The engine cover got to spend some quality time with my dremel. Don't mind the zip-ties supporting the intercooler, I'm still figuring out how to make the brackets for it.
