I have a Canon xt that still works perfect. So instead of getting a new camera, I'm thinking about just getting new lenses. Which ones do you recommend? I take pics of everything, but mostly, I want to get into taking family pictures. Thanks

I am a nikon guy, but I know the cannon 17-70 lens is fantastic. My sister and good friend both have it and love it. You can get them on ebay for a few hundred...worth it...get some nice filters too.

I'm a Nikon guy too, but for either brand the 50mm 1.8. At its price($87 on Amazon) it's pretty much a must have. Here's a review.

Also, don't be afraid to look at other brands like Sigma or Tamron. I have the 10-20mm and 18-50mm Sigma lenses and am very happy with them. If I want/need to use the high dollar Nikon lenses, I just rent them.

if you'll be taking pics of mostly family, i'd suggest getting a lens with a wide zoom range. that way you wont have to be switching lenses that often and will be able to captures moments quicker. canon now has an 18-200 lens. havent used it myself but have heard some decent comments about it. plus 18-200 should cover just about everything you need to shoot.

Thanks guys. Someone said that the Canon 10-22mm wide angle was a really good lens, but they're asking a lot of money for it. What would sigma and Taron make that is similiar to it.

I was in the market for a Canon 10-22mm, but didn't want to pay the premium.

I ended up purchasing a Tokina 12-24mm and I love it!

Check out this section in the Canon forums that Merv's been recommending: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=107.

There are lens threads with pictures from just those lens.

Maybe that can help out your decision once you look up prices.

I have the Sigma 10-20mm. I'm happy with it. I think Sigma also makes a 12-24.

it seems like everyone is using either Canon or Nikon, how is Sony and how is this camera?

Don't even bother asking, when buying a DSLR, youre forgettting you will be buying accessories, esp aftermarket lens, and guess which two brands have the BIGGEST variety of quality lenses....yeah Canon and Nikon.

Canon 16-35mm is awesome... the 24mm is great too. So is the 50mm. The thing about the 50 is that on a small frame SLR, it isn't a real 50mm lens.. you'd need something closer to a 28mm or something (need to do the math).

The things to look for are the lens speed capabilities (aka F stops). The lower, the F stop capability, the faster the lens, and typically better and more expensive too...

I currently have a 40D with a 28-135... but here's my shopping list:

-Canon 50mm 1.8 (unless I get a good priced used 1.4) because the build quality is crap on the 1.8--- hence the cheapness.

-Canon 16-35 F/2.8 , althought since I have a 40D It won't have as great an effect as it would on a full frame like the 5D.. so I would also need a fisheye lens that is <16mm

-My ultimate lens need: Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 IS USM. I LOVE this lens, great at so many things... just quite expensive.

I probably wouldn't want anything else.. my first and foremost need is the 70-200 but I just don't have $1600 for one of those... but its amazing, it's fast.. it basically helps an amateur look like a pro.

Shameless plug for the new mods done to the Ducati last night.. took pictures today real quick... so no judging! Lot's of new carbon on the bike, plus new rearsets and new levers...

Damn Jose bike is looking great!

OP, for the best quality lenses, go with Canon's "L" line of lenses. For decent quality, Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina are pretty good as well.

I'm currently finding that I switch between 2 lenses the most: my Tamron 28-70 F2.8 and my Sigma 10-20 F4 on my 40D. I do have a 50mm F1.8 and like Jose mentioned, it's crap. If you're looking for super zoom on a crop body, the 70-200 line of "L" lenses are great! I used to own both the F4 and F2.8 (non-IS) and those things are amazing. I sold them because I found that with my style of shooting, I didn't really need that much "reach".

For a good compromise, the 24-105 F4 L w/IS is a pretty good lens as evidenced by Mr.Cake's shot of the car. But yea, spend some time over at the Canon forums, they'll teach you (and show you) more than you'll ever want to know :)

I'm looking to learn photography and am looking for a good starter/ intermediate camera. Looking for a camera that's $500 and below. Totally a newbie with these things, but I'm just so curious and amazed with the pictures you guys shoots.

Any recommendations?

That's my favorite multi-purpose walk-around lens (well, I only have 3). :) I also have a Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM and a Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM;

16-35mm F2.8 L

That pretty much takes care of the types of photos I take (mostly landscape). But, I might pick up a prime for those days I just don't want to carry the added weight around.

the 16-35 F/2.8 is almost a must.. especially on non-full frames like most of us have since they are less expensive.

I would have to agree that a 24-105 would be a great all around lens and it's something that perhaps I haven't considered since I've been looking at my brother's stuff and his stuff is all full frame (he's got a 5D and a 1Ds MKIII)... he can shoot with the 70-200 easily inside the house and stuff but that wouldn't be as easy with the 40D.

BTW, to beginners.. the reason I mention full frame vs. non-full frame is because the cameras like a Canon XSi, XT, 40D, 50D, etc, use what is called a APS-C sized sensor which has a crop factor of 1.5-1.6...

What this means is that in these cameras a 50mm lens= 50mm x 1.6= 80mm

So in order to achieve the 50mm lens look on a 40D (for example) you really need a 31mm lens, which doesn't exactly exist...

The 24-105 is really a 38mm-168mm

The 70-200 is really a 112mm-320mm

You can read more about it here..

Just picked up an XTI from a buddy. He's a pilot that buys overstock items and re-sells them. Check it...

no kidding on the lenses... I'd love to find a good deal of the 70-200 or a 16-35

Both Canons and Nikons have great starter cameras. Since I'm not a Nikon guy, I'll let them chime in (where's Rigo?)

As far as Canons go, you can't go wrong with the XS or XSi. You can choose to get the package with the lens included, which will be a bit more than $500. Or I would recommend getting the body and shopping around for a lens.

This can be an expensive hobby! Because as soon as you get the camera you'll want more: flash, more lenses, tripod, better body, etc.

I used to have a crappy video tripod that I used and my night shots were coming out blurry. I changed to a different tripod (carbon fiber) with a nicer head and no more camera vibrations. I paid a pretty penny for the whole tripod system though :(
