I retro fit h3 HID 3000k 35w in my stock housing, wasn't easy as the HID bulb is a lot longer in the back then a normal h3 so the back housing wouldn't fit back on, had to custom make a spacer with pvc pipe and siliconed it all back together. I already upgraded my headlights and was considering do the fogs as well but heard some horror stories that have kept me away. No problems so far, it's actually the opposite. The HIDs don't get as hot as halogens so the snow doesn't melt off the lens as fast. Same with my stock HID lowbeams. I've been trying to find a small set to put on my car, and these look like they'll work. Hella Optilux 1500 (driving light pattern) IIRC, the lens is slightly bigger than the opening but the housing is small enough to fit. The beam pattern isn't as good as some of the bigger lights I've had on the car, but I removed those to get more air into the intercooler and radiator.
