Ice Racing the LGT

Recommended Posts

I went out on Lake Iroquois in Vermont yesterday to do some ice racing. It obviously wasn't a real racing event, just a few of us having some fun.

I had a great time, although it would have been nice to have some studded snow tires. This video really doesn't do it justice, but you'll get the idea. I'm definitely going back sometime this week, it’s the most fun I've had in my car.

Sorry about the the jerky camera and my lack of video editing skills .

Just keep your distance, it won't be a problem. They're used to snowmobilers and cars.

i wanna do that, but i think im too low

I'm sure you'd be fine, my car is lowered too, but I didn't have any issues...well, I did slide off the track a couple times and got high centered on the snow, The guys in the Bronco were more than willing to pull me out, got to love the local rednecks.

Studded tires will help a lot if you got them, I kept my tire pressure around 33lbs...you might get a bit better traction with lower pressure though. Learn to use the weight transfer of your car to do "peldulem" turns...avoid using the e-brake, blip the throtle to control the slides. You get better traction if you hug the inside of the turns where the snow is still built up. Look ahead and plan the best line so you can get set up for the next turn. Do some practice before you jump into racing, a lot of it is just getting the feel of the car and understanding how it's going to react in different situations.

This was my first time on an ice track, but ever since I got my license I'd always go out on roads late at night during snow storms and pretend I was Tommy Makinen  .

There is an club that does ice racing every weekend on Lake Winnebago here. I have only been once so far, but it was a blast. Definately looking forward to going back!

I've been to these events, in fact went to the last one. So far between me and my co driver at the two events, we've finished 1 and 2 for 3 of the four heats...

FYI ice racing is a great idea for anyone. As an autocrosser I thought I knew how to drive...that is until I went to ice racing-it's a completely different style of driving. Try it out, I promise you won't regret it.
