how are speakers sized?

i just bought some 6.5 inch speakers...

and they didnt fit in my 97 BD sedan

 

i looked at hte box and the specs were 4.62 inch cutout diameter?

since the speaker Just missed.. im guessing if i were to get somethign with a cutout diamter of 4.5 or so it would fit?

 

the only thing thats preventing it from fitting is the way it sits... the speaker is a little larger so it doesnt sit flush to the car.

 

 

is there another way to make speakers fit?

Cut an MDF spacer that fits your new speaker.. bolt it over the old cutout and put in your new speaker.. make sure it is not too thick to interfere with the door panel
