jbm
My 2005 Legacy GT 5SP wagon is the wife's grocery getter. Lately I've been noticing spots on the garage floor around where the rear diff would be when parked. I jacked the car up and got underneath, and while there was some evidence of moisture and dirt buildup on the cover of the diff, probably from the breather, there was not enough to cause a drip. With some further searching, I found that the forward passenger side mount had some kind of viscous fluid on it that was clearly the source of the drip. The strange thing is, I can't see anywhere that this fluid could be coming from, other than the mount itself, or perhaps somehow it's blowing back from the engine area, and always exactly hitting this mount and collecting there. It's a mystery, to be sure. I've never heard of a fluid-damped rear diff mount, but is there such a thing on a Subaru? Does anyone have any ideas for me? Obviously, I want to make sure there's nothing wrong with the car, but I also want to stop the staining of my garage floor from this. I'll get under the car again tomorrow and try to take some pictures and do some further searching for any possible sources of the fluid. Thanks for any ideas. AZP Installs
You hit the nail on the head. It is that mount. The 05 had liquid filled mounts back there. We recently had a car with the exact issue. Subaru tends to experiment with liquid bushings from time to time with the same results. If it is something that would bother you Whiteline has a replacement bushing but otherwise its not a huge critical thing. -Jake http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://upload.pbase.com/image/137566671.jpg Call directly for your best Whiteline Price! | We also carry almost every manufacturer now, so before you buy parts call us. jbm
Fantastic, thanks for the feedback. I was unable to find the correct foil on the parts sites that show that mount. Do you happen to have a part number or know which foil it's shown on? Do you need a press to switch over to the whiteline bushing? I definitely want to solve the drip. Max Capacity
Oh so that is why the forward mounts don't have slots in the rubber bushings. It must be just the early production numbers. Thanks Jake BTW, when I replaced my rear diff, I couldn't get the passenger side nut to break free, I just ratchet straped the mount to the suspension. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. jbm
Has anyone else replaced this mount that can give me some more info? Are the whiteline bushings an easy swap? Does anyone have a part number for the original piece?

dave g
what is the downside to leaving the old bushing in,other than the drip? I'm experiencing it as well.
Max Capacity
If Mike form AZP doesn't check in soon, PM him. He may know more about these. I would think over time you will have more slop and the diff may begin to move places where it wasn't meant to. I know that when I replaced my rear diff last summer I could not get the bolt out of that corner of the front mount. I just pushed it to the right right suspension and strapped it there. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). AZP Installs
what is the downside to leaving the old bushing in,other than the drip? I'm experiencing it as well. If it's leaking then it isn't really holding the diffy in place the way it's supposed to. -Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/141039922.jpg%5Dhttp://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://upload.pbase.com/image/137566671.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts.
