Koni Shock/Strut & Epic Engineering Spring Install

Recommended Posts

Konis are no match for a good set of coils. No strut made for the LGT is going to "compete" with a set of good coils. "Good" in my book being KWV2/RCE Tarmacs, Bilstein BSS, AST and possibly Tein Flex.

Agreed 100%, although I would leave the Teins off the list.

I think I have read this whole thread and I don't remember this being addressed... If I cut right at the edge of the silver cap, will the Koni inserts pull in properly? That seems like an easy way to get a straight cut with a hacksaw if it doesn't leave them too long, and if I can avoid buying a pipe cutter why not?

Thanks, Doug

I didn't cut right at the silver ring, but from my estimates, the Konis should be able to sit just fine even with the strut bodies cut all the way at the top, as long as the lip on the Koni doesn't hit. I could be wrong about this but from eyeballing it, it looked like it would be fine.

Technically yes, but it's hard to get them sucked down if you cut too high the screw can't reach them from the bottom

You will want the pipe cutter, well worth the money. The hack saw gives you a rough cut, the pipe cutter gives you a nice smooth cut.

Can buy longer bolt at hardware store for about a dollar to get the sucking process started.

Yep, that's what it looked like to me. I mentioned that earlier in this thread, but I just wanted to double check. :)

Ha!! Yeah just realized when the Koni is pulled down to the bottom of the OEM assembly, it will still be sticking out the top the same distance no matter what cut is made. Same with the distance from the perch to the top of the strut. Dur

It seems like the most important measurement is to make sure the nubs on the Koni insert fit properly and completely inside the OEM assembly to secure to center and create a snug fit between insert and OEM assembly...

TY

Yes, this is where I cut mine and the nubs will be in the housing well over 1". Note that I have a 5th Gen, so maybe a little bit different OEM shock dimensions than 4th Gen.

^if you take that, but just put the cutter as far against the silver cap as you can (another 2mm to the left in that pic) then the 4th gen fit is perfect and you can use the screw provided to suck the konis in without any problems.

Awesome. Thanks for thw prompt feedback!!!

Will I need any special alignment with the H techs? I believe they only drop <1", so I wouldn't think so. Just a standard alignment, yeah?

Now, where can I get some 3/8" spacers for the rear? Probably just cut my own from a HDPE cutting board if I can find one on the cheap :)

No problem. Nothing against the previously mentioned retailer. I actually run 2 of their parts on my wifes 5EAT. I also noted FBP before my own company as we are both forum vendors and both carry the same spacers. IIrc Paranoid Fabrications used to be a vendor here too. If I dont get the sale, I would prefer to see another forum vendor get it.

Just wondering if this process is exactly the same for any springs? I ordered Koni Yellows and Tein H techs for my 08 Legacy 2.5i. Is there different measurements for the cut with different springs, or can I use this DIY safely with my Tein H's??

Yup same process.

And the markup on the spacers is almost zero, so no need to fight over them but definitely get em from Infamous or AZP. :)

I am using 3/8" spacers on the rear, and want to know what size bolts I can use from the hardware store. I saw someone mention M8 - 1.25, but unsure of the length. Looks like maybe 25mm or 30mm? Also, can I use 1/4" or 5/16" standard instead of the metric? Stronger and cheaper!!
