chrith
Living in florida, Legacy Gt wagons are few and far between. I found an 05 on carmax with 75k on the clock for a decent price. Had it shipped down and drove it today. after a quick drive of maybe 3 miles there was steam coming from the grill when i returned. SHould this be an immediate red flag and pass on the car? They were going to take a look at it tomorrow.

Subaru1601
Also any clue what this stuff is? Edit, thanks for the heads up It kinda looks like the stuff they spray on battery terminals to stop them from corroding.
sodium303
Could be burning oil. Mainly oil dripping on to the exhaust manifold. For example if yo had a Valve cover gasket leak, that would drip right on to the Exhaust manifold.
Vaders_3.0R
I would think if it was oil that it'd be more smokey looking right? I vote for water somewhere that got hot and turned to steam. I would just have them do a good once over. Besides you have 5 days to return the thing and get your $$$ back!!! I would say if everything checks out take it to a subaru dealer and have them check it out and go from there.
EyeFlyIsTheEye
That looks like radiator stop leak. I think the steam is coming out and that stuff sprayed around because there's a crack in the radiator or the cooling lines. Keep it in consideration but insist they take it to a Subaru dealer first before you buy.
minuccims
Better look in the radiator and look for nice looking antifreeze. That crap could be from a head gasket leak of oil into the coolant and foaming up. Maybe getting pushed out a leak in the radiator as suggested. domoMKIV
I find it interesting a dealership would show you a car looking like that. My wife and I went to a CarMax to look at an 05 Nissan Pathfinder, common problem on the VQ40 was timing chain guides, when the sales guy started it up it sounded AWFUL and he was playing it off as nothing.
