05 Legacy BP5 GT Limited - 07 JDM BP5 Legacy Tuned By STI conversion project

Tried to test fit my EDM Legacy Wagon rear bumper crash beam today and found that the USDM rear bumper beam brackets are not compatible. So I just sourced the EDM brackets and will try again in a couple days when it arrives.

During this process you always find little odds and ends broken, missing clips, pop its torn, and other misc stuff that just isn't mounted right. I'm very anal and OCD with that. Paying attention to detail is so important on these projects. It has to stand out and be as close to the factory spec as possible. Well that's just my process and philosophy. Probably why I became a filmmaker.

What do you do to correct that? Epoxy new tabs and drill new holes?

I actually use the parts data base and find the correct part numbers and replace things that are broken or missing.

These are my 2006 JDM Tuned By STI Legacy Wagon Bilsteins. They have been sold to a new owner. I plan on using my 08 JDM SPEC B REV D-F Set up till something else stands out.

I really love the subaru accessories that are available for the Japanese Market. I believe they are vastly superior to what we get from SOA. I picked up this all weather cargo mat in black from SOJ. It is a perfect match to the rear truck room.

I really like that center console trim (cup holders and shifter surround)!!

 

And I think your right, that trunk mat looks to be higher quality compared to my USDM one.

When I started to pursue the JDM Legacy Wagon rear bumper, I knew that due to different crash standards in Japan, that JDM cars didn't have a rear crash beam. This bothered me as living in Los Angeles we have more accidents per capita than any place in the US. So after much research I found that the EDM Legacy Wagon/Sedan use the same spec rear bumper as the JDM one but with a rear crash beam! I don't know if it is exactly the same as I have a JDM rear bumper and a EDM crash beam but the only way to find out will be to test fit and see what happens.

lol. you're my long lost twin i never knew i had. hola dude. my air pressure and air bag decals are in for the door jam. fyi the 05 LGT uses a different sticker for the tire pressure then the 06-09 ones. who knew.

Well it seems that the EDM Legacy Wagon rear bumper crash beam will not work with the JDM Legacy Wagon bumper. The crash beam is still 1 inch too long. I will just cut the beam and weld it back together in order to make it functional. I compared the part numbers and noticed that the JDM and EDM rear wagon bumpers are not the same.

 

It seems the EDM model is a hybrid between the JDM and USDM model when it comes to the rear wagon bumper length. The JDM model is still about 1 inch shorter than the EDM and thus I cannot use the EDM rear crash beam. However it is a compromise between not having a crash beam and just using the JDM bumper skin only. It was said that the JDM outback bumper could use the USDM sedan crash beam and that makes sense given that the JDM outback rear bumper is also not the same length as the JDM legacy wagon rear bumper.

Now I mentioned earlier that the JDM BP Legacy Wagon got reclining rear seats and I ventured to figure out how to make them functional. First I sourced the rear seat system because I also wanted the nicer fabric and then I had to find the recliner system and components. Here is what I learned.

 

The recliner rail system consists of the JDM rear seat belt guide bracket which looks almost exactly like the USDM one but with a slight variation to accommodate the reclining mode.

In this picture you can see the parts I got when I sourced the JDM recliner system but found that most were not needed.

 

A= JDM rear seat belt guide bracket - must use

B= JDM rear quarter panel lower mounting bracket - must use to mount JDM rear quater trim

C= JDM rear seat child anchors - not needed

D= JDM rear recliner guide rails - must use

when installing the guide rails I found that all the mounting holes are there except for one which is important, the rear position on the wheel well part of the chassis. The hole is there but you just cant tap into it. So I will get a stud and have my mechanic weld it into place.

 

 

In this photo you need to simply remove the cap holding down the rear SRS sensor harness and put in the lower recliner activating mechanism and then put the cap back on top of the thread.

now after the reclining rails have been installed you must account for the ability to recline the seat when in the locked position. So, the JDM legacy has rear quarter panel trim with longer spacing in the fold down latch area to allow this to work.

Lastly since the reclining feature will obviously work while the tonneau cover is in place, you need the JDM one since it is designed to move with the seats.

Eventually another feature that is also apart of the JDM rear seat system will need to be addressed. The one-touch fold down switch. It is something I found useful in my 2015 FXT and was available back in 2003-2008 for the JDM models. The switch is there but the wiring and additional harness isn't. I've sourced it and will update once it arrives to see how it works.

Yes you are correct. I should have consulted you before buying the EDM/AUS rear beam. There is definitely a difference in the JDM Outback Bumper and the JDM legacy Wagon one. The JDM outback is similar to the EDM/AUS so it can use the EDM rear beam or the USDM sedan one. But the JDM Legacy Wagon bumper cannot. So as I mentioned, I will cut the EDM beam and use it.
