New to the world of Subaru (98 Legacy SUS)

Recommended Posts

Just picked up a 98 Legacy SUS from a dealer in Minnesota with the help of my father as I'm deployed in the Navy right now. I picked it out, he checked it out, and I don't get to drive it until July when I go home. All said and done, off the lot she was a little over $4k. I plan on driving it back from Minnesota to San Diego (where my ship is home-ported) and do some sight-seeing along the way. So, without further ado, here are pics.

These are all from the dealership's site - I'm itching for more, I need to drive this beast. No plans for modification in the near future - might have the head gasket checked out before it craps out and replace suspension eventually. Any suggestions?

KYB-GR2s struts are only $300 or so online, shipped. They're a good replacement if yours are old. KYB says that struts last 60k, but I would say they are good for about 100k. I like mine. They are pretty cush, and even better with some nice springs.

I have only seen two or three SUSs out here in Utah. They are really nice!

There should definitely be more of them on the road. Though, now that I've been browsing the forum for a while, I'm really starting to come around to the OB. Never really liked wagons, but they're classy. Plus then I'd be able to haul around more music gear for the band I hope to join when I get out of the Navy next January. I'll probably buy a new one during/after I finish college.

Also, I've got a counter on my phone - only 45 days until I get to drive my SUS. I was ok with being deployed (it allows me to buy things, like a Subaru), now I just want to go home and find a trail to drive.

edit: whoa, whoa.. what's up with the ridiculous looking headlights on the new models? And the grills? I don't like them. Not even a little.

I had a chance to get a 99 SUS that was pretty beat but would have been a decent car with work about a year ago. Didn't jump on it, Dealership sold it for $2,000 and the guy couldnt be happier. So lesson learned lol, very nice SUS you have to look forward to sir!

I just picked up a '99 SUS myself. Great car! I've loved Subarus for a long time, but this is my first. I didn't do a lot of research on the whole "SUS" thing before I picked it up, but now I'm glad that I grabbed it while I had the chance. Seems like an awesome (and somewhat rare) car.

Nice looking SUS. I think mine's a little more rare, as they only made a few in 98 for North America, and then in 99 did a "full" production, but they still didn't produce that many for sure. Nobody even lists the SUS as an option for 98's, so when scoping out parts I either enter 99 SUS or just go with 98 L or GT.

I like the woodgrain, it's kinda "90's drug dealer classy"

Really though, if anything I'll probably go silver or try to match the dark grey-ish bronze-ish of the two-tone job.

If you wanna get rid of the wood trim stuff, id trade you for all my grey pieces!

I wasn't as lucky as you guys with mine.

When I bought it, 3 days later I was replacing the headgaskets ( thermostat was rigged to stay open ) and a month later the trans shifted like a dick ( now it won't go into O/D unless I engage cruise @_@ ) - annnnd the heater core went too

c'est la vie

I bought my car with bad head gaskets also and didnt know it at the time. Im sure there is a lot of people that get dicked over buying these cars with bad head gaskets just as the symptoms start to show. I know what to look for now at least lol.
