mheeler
Just wondering if anyone knows if a Hand held Nav unit will fit behind the cover in the space ? Would be nice if this sat in there... http://www.garmin.com/products/sp2660/ I am thinking of getting a Subaru but don't have access to one to check this out - I only know there is a cubby hole under the cover !!! Thx
tsyGT
I have the 2610- nice unit by the way. I think it's a little too big to fit, but I can go check if you're really interested, plus it gets warm inside that cubby- so it might not be a good idea anyway. Finally, the GPS antenna is on top of the unit, which would no longer work if inside the cubby hole. You can get an external antenna if you really want though. I suppose with a little modification it might fit? Depends on how much you want to do. I actually like my unit sitting on top of the dash, it's easier to see while driving and doesn't obstruct my view out. tom tom

godwhomismike
I feel having something like that sticking out is just an invitation for being stolen, or at least having you car smashed into in a botched attempt. I perfer something a stock look, something that is part of the dash. That looks like with just a screwdriver a thief could break that unit out 1,2,3. - Mike
mheeler
Mmmmmm..... Interesting.... I wonder how difficult it would be to wire into the standard stereo. I see this looks like a Japanese car with the McIntosh stereo option which sounds good... I would still like to know how big the cubby hole is though !!! It's the location in the sunlight that's the problem. Regardless of what gets placed in that area, heat will be an issue to consider.

Before i got my LGT, my other car got broken into and they took a crow bar to the dash and ripped everything into pieces in a flash. There really is nothing to stop that type of thing from happening. I agree with the "stock" look, it will keep the said thief moving onto another car.

If you have the portable unit you just pack it up and hide it under your seat or in your trunk if you're worried about theft. No evidence it's been there. That Pioneer Nav setup looks nice, though. :) tom tom

D-2.5-GT
i believe you have to do some custom work to get that to fit. Someone had posted some pictures with that console piece out of the dash and there were some plastic supports back there that would need to be cut out of the way... Size-wise, i think a din device will fit no problem, but some harnesses / fabrication may be needed to get it to mount in that location, as there are no set anchor points for anything. DAP
Anybody know where the JDM navigation system gets its power? What kind of connector etc? I just bought a IQue 3600, and I'd like to rig the mount such that it is hidden in that cubby, and can be extended for use. I plan to modify the car kit for that, but I still need to find a place to get power. The power cord that comes with the car kit is only long enough to reach the cigarette lighter socket, and I don't like leaving the ash tray open all the time. I want to hardwire the mount into the car in such a way that it can be folded away, and hidden by closing the cubby door.

mmanus88
what are teh measurements (american) of that navi unit shown in the begining of the thread? as for "steal appeal," i think the new pioneer unit might be a little less attractive since it is black and blends in with the dash a bit more.
