Derrickmd30
I brought a 97 subaru legacy wagon and it doesn't have a tachometer in the cluster. Can I swap it with another cluster or do I have to rewire the new one in? Also how hard is it to pull the cluster? Idaho subaru
I too am curious about this, I have a Brighton 5MT without a tach. I picked up a cluster with a tach, and when I went to swap it out, I didn't have anything to plug into tach side of the cluster on my harness. On a side note though, while we are talking dash cluster. When I took my bezel off, there is a blank next to the rear defroster, it had a plug in the back of the blank. Does anyone know what switch would be to the right of the rear defroster switch. I'm guessing its pre-wired for something I can add on?
Osei
Download the fsm for your vehicle and check the electrical section for your year, will show connections for the dash unit. http://www.main.experiencetherave.com/subaru_manual_scans/ O.
johnegg
the wiring is there, just swap in an instrument cluster from a 97 or 98 lego 2.2L car. NOT 95 - 96 or 99. you just swap the tach in of you want, that is more work. and i doubt any parts yard is going to sell you just the tach. the whole cluster will swap , 8 screws and 4 connectors. of course your odometer miles will be different. you can adjust it to get within 10k miles, but by the time you have gone that far, you may as well have just swapped in the tach. wvkarmatoburn
I just swapped the tach from a 96 L into my 97 Brighton, along with the cruise, spotlight beside the rear view, cargo cover, and leather seat! Next are the new brakes and rotors on the L! One thing I did learn, the brighton is NOT pre-wired for power mirrors or locks... The connector in the blank beside the rear defroster is for the cruise. Derrickmd30
How hard was cruise to swap? What everything straight bolt on Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
wvkarmatoburn
Not hard. I just took my time and made sure I didn't forget anything. You need: Interior 1. Main Switch (beside Rear Defrost) 2. Command Switch (Steering Wheel) 3. Control Unit 4. Stop and Brake Switch Under the hood 5. Actuator 6. Vaccum Pump and vaccum line. Everthing is plug and play. Idaho subaru
the wiring is there, just swap in an instrument cluster from a 97 or 98 lego 2.2L car. NOT a 2.5L car. Ah, that might be the problem then, I didn't look to see what engine the car had, I don't think it had an engine actually. The cluster was already just about out, and it was in a 1997 legacy, so I just grabbed it. Here is a picture of the back of it, my Brighton doesn't have the plug on the left. Since it is behind the tach, I assumed it was the plug for the tach, and since I didn't have an extra plug, I thought I was out of luck. http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj605/Idahorec/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-02/A101FF9F-9AA2-401C-885C-06890591E0DB_zpsitlktfzm.jpg Interesting that my 5mt would have the plug for cruise? johnegg
CORRECTION!!! the engine MAY not matter. if the speedo wire and connector on your car fits the new cluster, the speedo will work. i'm pretty sure the GT connector is different. not sure about the outback. but all other legos should be the same. the brighton should have the connector for the tach. Idaho subaru
I have a Tach! Once I got the cluster apart and saw that there were just three screws holding the tach in, I decided to just transfer the tach into my cluster. http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj605/Idahorec/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-02/9651D894-FD95-4ADE-9E73-43490520DBA2_zpsavbgetyz.jpg So I got all excited on put it back together and fired it up and then I noticed something was amiss! http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj605/Idahorec/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-02/6F7F8FA9-96A5-46FD-A3E7-B5CA83AD8F1F_zpsvbh9utgo.jpg Darn it! Wrong color needle! I'm going to leave it for awhile and see if I like it, I almost like the idea of having the tach be red. Worst part is, I have one with the white needle, I didn't even bother to look at the color before the install! What do you guys think?
boattlebot
red looks nice. might wanna make the rest red imo
Idaho subaru
red looks nice. might wanna make the rest red imo That's true, I could change out the other three pretty easily. The odometer with the red needle only has about 6000 more miles on it.
johnegg
The odometer with the red needle only has about 6000 more miles on it. so swap the rest of the gauges in 6k miles.
Stevo F
I actually took apart the odometer on my old Nissan truck to move the wheels to the right numbers when replacing the odometer, but it was a pain to get the numbers to line up right again. johnegg
i did it on my replacement cluster. i didn'y want to take it all apart, too many small pieces. so i just lifted up one end of the top spindle that ''locks'' the number wheels. this let me rotate the 100k and 10k numbers. this let me set the odo within 10k (actually 3k iirc) of my old one.
