bman
I did an oil change this pat weekend. I noticed that the filter was smaller than a soda can. I've been reading on these forums that there are "longer" filter options. My initial thought is "Longer filter means more filter material and more filter material means better filtering." So is there a reason I wouldn't buy the longer filters? Besides the little extra oil it would need? BTW: I've been using Bosch or Mobile1 filters. GTTuner
Don't use Mobil 1 filters. I have disected almost every filter available, that one has the smallest, cheesiest element I ever saw. Bosch are OK. Purolator PurOne are the ones I like to use.
JoeFromPA
Bman - Purolator makes a model, I believe PL14610, that is the exact same spec but 1/2" taller than their spec'd model for the LGT, PL14612. As far as I can tell, they are identical except for that 1/2" difference. I've run both without issue. The extra 1/2" would hold maybe an extra ounce of oil, a bit more filtering capacity, and help cool down the overall oil sump by maybe 1 degree Personally, I see no reason not to use it, but I'm still running OEM filters too alot of the time. I don't have a preference, except that I'll buy the bigger filter when I have a chance.
AZP Installs
I don't see why not to use it but we use the Amsoil Extended Life filters and have been real happy with them. -mike
pagan
ur better off using the recommende size, most options will be around the same size, biggest difference is the internals
PoManzAWD
Not sure if this has been covered here, but supposedly Wix introduced a new oil filter for Subaru that supersedes their old 51365 part number. The new filter is 57712 and features the correct OEM bypass valve pressure spec of 23psi. Another option anyway! Joel
pillboy
Interesting...I tried a couple Wix filters in the past, but they cost more than OEM so I went back to Subaru. It is still ugly.
PoManzAWD
Interesting...I tried a couple Wix filters in the past, but they cost more than OEM so I went back to Subaru. I hear that. Plain labeled Wix filters are not only tough to find, they tend to be expensive. You pretty much have to buy Napa or Carquest house brand oil filters to get a Wix/Affinia. I guess Napa's new Subaru filter will have the 57712 p/n. Joel

Mega Users seabass07 Posted February 16, 2012 Mega Users Share Posted February 16, 2012 I've been using the mazda rx8 tokyo roki filters. They are the same price as an oem subaru filter, same bypass pressure, but bigger. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to get them, but the mazda dealership is much more convenient for me than the subaru dealership.

slowGT
I like the Beck Arnley filters. They have a larger diameter and seem to be good. I need to cut one open and see what the media looks like though.
bman
I've got 2 AutoZone shops near me and an Advanced shop a little further. I'm kinda left with whatever they have on their shelves: Bosch, M1, STP....? Of the ones I saw I think Bosch is the best choice?

bman
I don't have faith that the dealership oil filter is the better than average. At $7 I think I can get a better filter aftermarket. This is based on no facts at all.
Fastball
If I remember correctly the Wally World SuperTech filters are decent. Made by the same company that makes Bosch. Personally,..... ALWAYS an Amsoil EaO filter.
