Use muffler as Y?

Would those universal single input to dual output mufflers work as a Y pipe for our cars? Do they flow well enough?

 

Say you use a magnaflow muffler, like this: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=8085 and drop it in the mid pipe. The two outputs would just extend to the rear of the car and with some tips on the, exit under the bumper. (only a single large muffler instead of two smaller ones)

 

Is this a dumb idea?

Agreed. Most light SUV use the design your speaking of but they use 3in inlet and 2.5 outlet or even 3 in outlet. but then you need the bend the piple around the rear axles. the thing is there isnt enough space under the car to fit the muffler.

#1 i am positive in what im saying

#2 you have a wagon so you have a lil more room

#3 and from my friends doing a similar set up on their car (not lgt) they had to get a small muffler that acutally constricted flow.

 

So yes i am positive on what im saying. but if im wrong a just let me know. dont be an ass...

there is no difference in the area near the drive shaft on wagon or sedan. If your planning on throwing the muffler behind the rear axle like the new STI/5door wrx, then no...it wont fit.

 

If you want to put a full size can where most people put a resonator, it will fit just fine. I DONT THINK you can run 2 pipes from there back, but I know u can fit a can.

 

The only thing I can think of is maybe the Spec.B angel moved the driveshaft?

That i wasnt thinking of, if you use a round can like a cherry bomb then i can see it. and i agree bout the two pipe but if you place it just before the y or use custom y's it could work.

 

The only thing I can think of is maybe the Spec.B angel moved the driveshaft?

There is room for a medium size muffler under there. The stock resonator is huge, but somewhat thin on one side. The thing is I'd much rather run a single 3 around the diff and axle and make my own Y than run two 2.5's. Also I could use the money i saved my not having to purchase 2 mandrel bent 2.5" pipes to purchase a prefab Y to make things even easier.

hahahah ppl saying it wont fit have never looked under our cars :lol: that is a great idea and extra work WTF is he talking about ?? Anyway sounds like a good idea cheaper b/c you only need one muffler and bending two pipes will work around the axles

Thanks for the replies guys. So from what I'm reading, that they muffler will fit, but the issue is getting 2 pipes past the axles instead of one? I wasn't aware that the stock Y was after the axles.

 

I was also considering using a borla.

It's a lot smaller than the Magnaflow and the outlet pipes are down to the proper 2.25".

 

I wonder if it would reduce sound enough? I mean a lot of systems use 1 muffler (for the STI and WRX) and they sound great (especially the borlas). There's also the question of whether it'll need a resonator or not.

 

The Borla I posted above is from their Turbo XL series. Anyone know how they are designed and whether they flow well? From the diagram they look like straight through (save for the internal Y split) designs.

I was looking at Resonators on Vibrant's website, they also have universal mufflers. Anyone know how they sound?

Thank you so much the Y is before the rear diff housing two pipes can easily be bent around the rear axle housing and that muffler will fit better than the blimp in place now. If that thing can fit ANY muffler can with room to spare i was looking at using a Dynamax Welded series 3" in dual 2.25" out with two tail pipes bent to stock locations But I got a really good deal on two Magna Flows $50 for two from a user on here but i would like to try it to see how it would sound

Looks like Vibrant also makes two 3" to dual 2.5" universals. One is 20" overall and the other is 25". I wonder what the interior design of those are. They claim a "Straight Through Design" for their StreetPower series of mufflers.

It's not that 2 pipes can't go around the diff it's just more work. I was thinking I may do this though so I can run 2 resonators and try to keep things quiet.

The Y is after the diff and no I wouldn't say any muffler will fit for two reasons. 1. the stock resonator I believe is about 18" long and mufflers can be much larger than that. 2. the stock resonator is thin on one side so it can clear the body. You are most likely going to loose some ground clearance even with a 4" thick body.

Yeah, I'm starting to think that space will be an issue. Mainly trying to squeeze a resonator and a muffler in the mid pipe. The mid pipe isn't as long as I had hoped. It also has that bend right before the Y (to go around the rear diff i presume). Reduces a lot of room in there. Def room for one muffler or resonator, but prob not both.

 

Probably just as well to get to rear cans and do it the way the Subaru engineers designed it.

 

Theres also the question of exhaust hangers. How many are there in the mid/Y area? Are there enough to hold the weight of a bigger muffler AND resonator?

Are there any issues running the resonator after the muffler? I've never seen that before and am curious why that is? Is it just because people usually put mufflers as close to the exit as possible and then the most logical place for the resonator is somewhere in the middle?

 

Curious how a 3" to 2.5" dual to 2 2.5" Ultra Quiet resonators would sound.

I don't think it matters. I see a lot of SUV's with stock exhausts that have resonators right there at the rear bumper. I was thinking 3" into two 2.5" glasspacks and 2 2.25 mufflers. Here is some info I found

I was going to try that then I went the 3 muffler route and my car is pretty quiet. I don't think that having 3 mufflers causes a problem with making power. I'm hit about 340whp on 91 cali and 371whp on e85 and hit 20psi @ 3400rpms and hold @20psi to 7000 rpms.
