frs
What are the flaps in front of the rear wheels below the car called? I think there are two on each side that are staggered. Also, what do they do?
praedet
Called, umm, don't know the technical Subaru name, but they are basically spoilers. They are made to deflect the wind around the tires for better high-speed stability...
mickeyd2005
I have heard people refer to them by a variety of names. In addition to spoiler, I have also heard "diverter" or 'air dam". They do what Ted says. Some cars also incorporate them to reduce drag. http://www.insightcentral.net/_images/enstrakes.jpg
edmundu
Yeah, Kevin(Boxrpwr) has referred to them as vortex generator's! I like the fancy term myself....sounds more high tech:)
bemani
Why don't the front wheels have them on the Legacy? I see a lot of cars have them in the front.

Gire
I just think they're there to scrape on my bumpy driveway! +1 on vortex generators! But at least our little black flaps don't look as stupid as the triangles affixed to the roof of an Evo! I can't believe there is aftermarket demand to add these things to other cars! praedet
The funny part is that by the definition of what they do, air dam and spoiler are the only names that are right. They should most definitely not be called diffusers or vortex generators... But they do keep that mud off when backing up

LNeilB
Call me threadjacker, but now that we know what they are - has anyone tried the factory (non-backup) mudflaps? Wondering how they work, Vermont roads are a mess.
