Taillight painting anyone?

I haven't got it all back together yet, and I've only done the passenger side.

I need to get a faster drying adhesive/sealer to put the lens back on. I just popped it apart and took all the red out to where it was all chrome.

Then i covered the brake/turn signal/and backup light housings with tape and cardboard and scuffed the chrome a little, sprayed a light coat of primer, then sprayed it semi-flat black, put it all back together and there's no chrome trim now and the red looks darker.

I'll keep you guys updated. I'm going to finish them tonight hopefully after work.

It's terrible getting the plastic lens off though. I used a heat gun and a scraper tool and it cracked the edges and corners a lot. The lens is looking pretty rough so I'm going to spray tint them probably and see if it covers some of the blemishes up.

This is a shitty mod. lol.

The taillights don't heat up and loosen like headlights. Basically, there's a tongue and groove system and you have to break the "tongue" from the taillight lens. I'm hoping the black silicone I'm using will seal it up to where you can't really see the busted-ness.

Got the first taillight at home setting right now, using 3 clamps to hold it together while the silicone cures.

took lots of pics while busting apart the 2nd taillight and painting it. I'll post them in a little bit, fiends!

This is what i was talking about with the "tongue and groove" system. Some of the tongue stays, some of it goes. This is the root of the busted look

taillight looks good.. that breakage is NASTAH! looks like you need a replacement taillight now.

here's a thought tho.. although I like your perspective on this and the authenticity and consistency of the outcome, I think the difference between the internal painting and an external overlay is negligible from a distance.. therefore, I tihnk painting the tails to darken them on the outside or a smoked overlay is probably a safer and better bet.

kudos on the originality, love the idea, execution is good, but the taillights aren't going to cooperate it seems.

car looks badass.. got coilovers? I love the stance.

hey one more crazy idea to kind of go with this trend.. have you thought about darkening the LED turnsignal mirrors in some way?

oh.. and nice hhr........ nicer vette tho.

that guy across the street.. he should do something about those green flower boxes.. tacky..

I've thought about spray tinting the tails and the turn signals on the mirrors, but I dont know now.

The reason I've been wanting to do this was that I don't think the Chrome trim pieces flow well with my dark color and dark wheels. So I blacked out the headlights, which was easy peasy. But the tails just don't work.

The headlights are glued together with a type of glue that will loosen with some heat. The tails are pretty much superglued together and heat doesnt effect anything really.

Overall, I recommend that nobody try this. Smoking or tinting your taillights from the OUTSIDE of the lens will yield the same basic results.

I was very careful in doing this and I was fairly patient. I used a lot of heat and gentle prying, but the taillights are too brittle.

talk to docholiday on taking apart the tails. He did a custom LED array in his.. he might have had a different method.
