$20 DIY Open Induction Cover

Well but this just is engine compartment hot air suckage refined.

That's why I put the piece of lexan (clear polycarbonate) between the intake and the engine.

Also, I would recommend leaving the scoop in place that redirects air flow to the intake

Can anyone fill me in on how this benefits the car? is it worth doing this instead of an intake? Thanks

A cold air intake would have more intake, but this is better than stock and a lot cheaper than a cold air intake. Also, this doesn't require a tune whereas a CAI does. Plus the wicked awesome whooshing and BOV sounds that you now get to enjoy every time you put your foot down.

If you're asking if there is any power increase, I've never dynoed my car, but I would doubt there is much. For me it was more that it looks good, sounds good, and was really cheap and fun to do.

i did some heatshielding too, but used aluminum sheet and covered it with that thermotec reflective tape (i'll take/post pics in here one day) -- at least to the touch, the intake is now waaaay cooler after running than it was without, so heatshield definitely a good idea for this hot-air-intake mod :)

Sounds good to me, doing it as soon as this 25 inch snow clears up . Thanks

That heat shield doesn't stop any heat. I think the OEM setup was a much better solution. I used to have a snorkel that would get air from outside the car...right in front of the radiator/behind the front grill.

Really? Have you done this on your own car and compared the difference so that you know that the heat shield is useless? You're entitled to your own opinion, but stating for a fact that it doesn't work if you've never seen it first hand is just ignorant. Believe me when I say that there is a HUGE difference in temperature between the engine bay and the intake area. Maybe if you're sitting still and revving the engine, there will be some hot air sucked in, but if you're moving at all, the air in the intake compartment is constantly being replaced through the stock "scoop" and from under the car into the "drug-smuggling area". The heat shield keeps virtually all of the heat from the engine bay separate from the intake.

Ive been researching a bit and from reading some CAI kits need a tune for WOT applications. While not a neccesity, its a definite benefit to the engine.

Does this setup, being essentially a stock open box require a tune? Will the stock fuel map be adequate at WOT or higher RPMS?

I am adding a cat back system to my 05 and would like a little better airflow coming in as well. However Im not quite ready for a full tune

Thanks in advance

Pretty cool. Would be nice to get rid of the reso *edit: upon doing this, realized you do get rid of the reso XD LOLOL...stupid*, have some sort of dryflow filter to avoid sucking in water, and find a way to point the filter down where the reso would be so your pulling air from the wheel well area...hmm...
