SpecBamf41
On these older car thing wear you never though or knew about. Till now. The way you starter get power is simple. Your key turn send power to an electromagnet that plunges a conductive part down completely a circuit of direct power from the battery to the starter motor. These copper contact wear and get bad to the point they don't conduct anymore. Then all you hear is that click! Click click. After a few trys you can start the car but eventually your few tryst will turn into 10, 25, ect. Here is the housing for the plunger and all that jazz you were reading about. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/08/u9usepet.jpg Pull this off and the plunger will help as its spring loaded. Not crazy tension but just so you know. This is what you see once the plunger just pulls out. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/08/u8e4ajy2.jpg Here is the plunger before and after cleaning http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/08/yme2avad.jpg I used a small file and brush. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/08/etybe3aq.jpg You then take apart the contacts to replace or clean. I replaced mine because I had a brand new pair from when I did this last year on my old auto trans. Your thinking why didn't I just swap starter? Auto and manual starts are different. Same pic below but you can see the two copper prices that get slammed every time you turn your key. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/08/abumege2.jpg to removal Undo 12mm nut on outside. Then the eyelet Then the flat 14mm. Then pull the plastic washed thing off. Now you just kinda fiddle with the stud and remove the contacts. New contacts are 12 dollars from an alternator rebuild shop place near me. Here are the old. You can see the newer ones installed already http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/08/qamyqyvu.jpg Put together in same order http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/08/a7yzaryj.jpg Sent from my Galaxy Tab using TapaTalk 2 BNR18g on 93oct

DOHCEJ22E1
When I tried to start the 22D the very first time, I kept getting clicking. It wasn't until my father suggested that I do this exact same thing that got my car started. I used sandpaper though & scraped the contacts like a madman. PDXLegoWagon
I just did this last week. From the time I popped the hood to the time I fired my test start couldn't have been more than an hour, Eazy peazy. I Ordered the contacts from ebay for $7.50, just search for Denso starter contact. For a couple bucks more you can get a new plunger too. I just cleaned my plunger with a wire brush and it works fine. Here is a link to the listing It purchased from.
