1999 Legacy vin split cursed car

Recommended Posts

K let's start out by saying this car has been the same.on everything else parts wise until this point.

Car had bad hesitation problem shortly after I bought it 2012

Compression test came in low for one cyl but not out of spec.

Same cyl ended up having bad spark plug wire more than a year later and around $500 in parts, dealer diagnostics and several threads on here.

Car ran good for a couple weeks then at completely random had no compression in all cyls.

Checked timing, was OK. Put back together. No compression. Tore back apart checked timing again. Still good. Put oil in cylinders, car finally has enough compression and fires up, still has low compression on one side smokes white immediately overheats.

Get pissed off let the car sit a couple months .

Pulled the heads. Car was out of time??? Cyl with misfire and lowest compression was full of wet loose gloppy carbon. Took heads to machine shop to be planed. First they found not sealing valves on the cyl with the low compression, they were all carboned open. So I needed plane and valve lapping $350 and dealership gsskets and other crap $300.

A: The dealer had never had to order the head gasket for this type of car, ever.

B: Machine shop had never seen heads like this. Also, the valve seals the dealership gave me for machine shop to install (because they had a large drawer of spares and wanted to get rid of them) did not fit. Course this was 4:30 on a Friday so we couldn't get the right ones bit neither dealership or machine shop had seen this phenomena or knew if the right ones existed. The have done 3-400 Subaru heads.

I can get part numbers for the head gaskets and etc... but what the hell is this thing?

Because the dealer said he'd never had to order this particular gasket, machine shop said they never have seen a head like this, and the dealer parts didnt fit, I'm wondering what the heck I'm dealing with and why everything's so funky.

No problems really yet except I'm going insane waiting for the machine shop, who says that they can ordered their own seals now.

Cross referencing parts valve seals on rock auto are the same 1996-2006 for 2.2 and 2.5 engines. Subarupartsforyou indicates 2000-2001 had a unique exhaust and intake seal. Might take the 2000 seals?

If it's a 2.2L, you have a complete Phase 2 2.2L engine, unless your car orignally had a 2.5, then it's a Phase 2 2.5L Block with Phase 1 DOHC heads. 1999 model year was a transition year for legacy. Good news is, if your Legacy is truely an L with a 2.2L, you can throw in a Phase 2 2.5L

Its a 30th anniversary. Has an L badge on the back. Anyone want the Vin?

Got the heads from machine shop Friday. Cost $440 for valve job and planing. He was such a dick that all he would say is the dealer sent the wrong parts wouldnt say much else.

Haven't had time to unwrap them will post pics asap

usually this is a lie,

blame the other guy, it was their fault.

besides, he was a dick.

but it could be true.

but if it were i would think there would be a few more details.

but regardless,

you have your heads back and ready to go in.

good luck.

  • I Donated

Years when they started changing things were weird for Subaru.

I had a 1996 Outback that had a factory 2.2 in it with dual port exhaust. The info plate on the driver strut tower even said EJ22. To throw another curveball, it was a California emissions car.....so when I got it stuck in a river and destroyed the ECU by submerging it in water it was interesting to find a replacement for it LOL

Johnegg... yep he was a dick allright. According to a friend he said that the machine work looked good. We will have to see how it runs.

Broke that's nuts. I remember looking for Cali spec ecus once for the giggles of it and there were not many.

I have about 4 more hours to go, fluids, hook up hill holder, install timing cover, alternator and odds and ends.

When the heads were off because of all the prior bs...I had 22 hours in it. Now I have 34 hours. What a pain. Outside, in the yard where I parked it after overheating it after getting it to run after randomly having no compression... sat there so long the bugs ate all the dead grass and now there is just dirt.

lets start with the basics.

how much coolant did did you add to the syste?

did you burp the system?

is it a ''subaru'' t-stat?

has ''stop leak'' ever been added the system?

does the radiator flow freely out the bottom when you put a hose in the top?

Running the car for 50k on this little guy caused the issue I think... Best explanation I have for what popped the gasket. Uneven cyl pressures and heat. Then when I fixed it it let go.

My 300 in Subaru dealer parts.

Yes I did this in the yard. One day was 89 degrees and a couple weeks later it was 32 degrees when I was working on it to reassemble. When I was pissing with it in June it was miserable hot.

I spent:

300 for Subaru Parts hg, intake, exh, antifreeze stop leak, thermostat, a crossover pipe, timing belt, misc

440 for machine work

100 for a battery

100 for fluids and supplies like sand paper, brake clean, degreaser.

Before that during pre diagnosis teardowns I spent

20 for a new oil pressure sensor

20 for a timing belt guide

20 for degreaser and misc to clean ops leakage

22 hours in pre diagnosis wtf compression testing tear downs etc since May

21 hours in tear down, reassembly and bleeding the damn cooling system which took 4 hours.

I replaced a Stant thermostat, which would bleed in about 30 mins, with a Subaru one. I ended up running it, filling the radiator and the overflow, and letting the cool down vacuum draw it into the block, then repeat. After the third cycle it began to bleed normally. What a pain!

That's pretty much it. **** this car. It runs now though.
