Preventative Maintenance - new turbo

Rockets GT

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to swap out my turbo before it blows and causes further damage. My engine is stock and I have an AP running stage 1. I do have a catless uppipe and shorty downpipe that I would like to install while everything is out. Am I better off sticking with the vf40 or getting the newer vf46? Also, any suggestions of other preventative stuff to do while I'm in there?

Well it sounds like your in the right direction but has the turbo showed any issues to warrant replacement yet? A used vf40 could have more issues than your current one if you go used.

A vf40 and vf46 are almost identical in terms of power and flow, some have seen quicker spool up response from the vf46 but that could be because of the bcs system, 07+ heads etc. I personally think your better off sticking with the vf40 if going with factory sized turbo but that's just opinion.

Edit: make sure you go with new oem or grimmspeed gaskets for the up pipe and turbo to downpipe gaskets. Nothing sucks worse than reinstalling everything to find out you have an up pipe leak because it wasn't replaced. Also have a few new up pipe studs handy if your new up didn't come with all new studs. Sometimes they have a way of stripping or sticking on the old up. Last if you are using the stock catback with an aftermarket dp you will need an adapter to seal the exhaust at the midsection. You can sandwich the dougnut gasket to get a partial seal but it seems to always start leaking eventually.

Hope this helps.

No, the current vf40 has not showed any signs of fatigue. My brother who is a mechanic is moving back to AZ this summer and I want to take advantage of his cheap labor. I'm also planning on changing the clutch and flywheel too.

The vf46 has shown less failures... however, its newer, so that's expected. No definitive data that one is better than the other... Yet.

have you checked your banjo bolt?

Honestly, not sure i would replace it at this point. If it's running well, etc.

There are ppl that lost their vf40's with 20k on them... so a replacement isnt always the best bet! lol

Enjoy the d/p job. lol 7 year old car, those bolts are on there! lol

Start up the pb blaster now.

What is that thread supposed to tell me? I'm missing something. That dude had 24k on his car vs 75k and 7.5 years old on mine. My thought is that I replace the turbo for $1k today vs replacing if after it blows plus what ever it takes with it.
