Spec.B front strut issue

Hello guys, I was hoping to get some advice.

I bought an 07 Spec.B used about 6 months ago, with the original Bilsteins and about 60K miles.

I've been hearing a noise coming from the front passenger side when going over bumps/cracks/irregularities for the last couple of weeks, and took the car to the dealer yesterday. They called me and told me that my front passenger strut and strut mount are busted, and they want to replace the strut + mount on both sides of the car. They quoted me $1800 for parts and labor. :(

I am going to get a second opinion early next week, but it seems to me that at 60K its a bit early for the stock Bilsteins to go. There are a lot of potholes where I live and I've been doing my best to avoid them, but I do hit a bad one every now and again...

I was wondering if anyone had run into this problem before and could chime in. Also, if it is the struts, what are my options? Should I replace them with Bilstein HDs, try to find new OEM Bilsteins (where can I get them cheaper than ~$400 a pop), or send them in to rebuild (how long does that take)?

Thanks, much appreciated.

Lots of after market options a lot cheaper than that. might try ebay for some oem used, but you can get a good quality after market set cheaper than the dealer wants.
If you woke up today, you have another chance to do it right.

First, where are you located? That could help us direct you to a better independent subaru shop to cut that price by 2/3 or more.

Second, what other mods or driving style do you do? Are you planning on doing other upgrades or are you looking to keep it stock?

@wurkenman

Any recommendations as far as similar quality aftermarket struts?

@AZP

I'm located in Indianapolis. Driving style is "spirited" I'd say, but nothing too crazy :). I don't participate in auto-cross at this juncture in my life. I have no idea how the car was treated before I bought it this past fall.

As far as mods go, so far the car is pretty much stock, but I want to slowly start upgrading/modifying it as cash allows. First thing I was planning was the brakes.

I would say that you have 2 or 3 different paths available to you at this point:

Option 1- Get replacement OEM struts to replace the failed ones along with strut tops to go along with them. You should be able to find them online for a decent price and have an independent shop install them for you. This would be the least expensive option for you.

Option 2- Convert over to Bilstein HD struts/shocks with new front top mounts. This option will likely cost a little more than Option 1

Option 3- Find some LGT front strut housings/takeoffs and then get a set of Konis to convert over the front and rear to Konis. This will yield probably the best ride of the bunch and is adjustable to your liking whereas the Bilstein setups are not adjustable. The Konis also come with a lifetime warranty. This is the most expensive option.
