timing belt fell off?

Recommended Posts

just bought a 98 legacy outback with 2.5 auto. its got 200k on it. i got it for 600. should i take the heads off and redo the valves or get a JY motor and pop it in. it would be cheeper for the JY option. but then I run the risk of the head gasket issues. Idk what y'all think:confused:

i'd buy a set of known good heads and install them.

but doing a head / valve job will work as well.

these engines are prone to internal head gasket leaks (untill they are replaced.)

so buying a used engine is a crap shoot.

you may get one with bad head gaskets.

in which case replacing them before you install the engine would be smart.

pooparu on www.ultimatesubaru.org is selling 2 sets of heads, i think.

he's in the PNW, oregon, i think.

not uncommon.

my guess is when you remove the center cover, you will find the toothed idler fubar.

maybe even some ball bearing floating around in side the cover.

i'd buy a set of known good heads and install them.

although with 200k, a lower mileage engine might be a better solution, but more expensive.

if it did go with a different engine, i would do the head gaskets and timing components before the install.

i would still probably risk the used heads if the engine is strong, good oil change history and never over heated.
