98 Forester Donor

Recommended Posts

I finally found a good donor to mod my 95 legacy l with.

http://louisville.craigslist.org/cto/4008444145.html

I did research and found a few interesting bits of info regarding swap compatible but would like any additional input.

  • Wheels bolt up

  • Struts bolt up

  • Springs bolt up

  • Trailing arm brackets bolt up

  • Front seats bolt up

  • Rear seat back with minor mod

  • ( Zues Marine) Sun Visor bolt up mod

This is what I've dug up so far, but I am curious what else might be compatible?

This might be shortsighted, but what exterior mods can I produce with this donor? ie bumpers, mud flaps, etc? What additional interior mods? Lastly, are there any performance mods to be gained ie exhaust, engine components etc etc?

basically the entire drive train will swap:

engine

trans (if you use the matching rear diff as well)

drive shaft (if both are auto or both manual)

brakes

wheel hub /knuckles (if both are ABS) but the forester wheel bearing wear out fast.

CV axles

front part of the exhaust w/ cats

probably steering wheel

i have never heard of swapping the rear seat over.

i have heard of putting outback / legacy seats into a forester.

a better fit would be a a 96 - 98 outback.

all the above parts would fit plus all the body panels, interior and glass.

good luck.

i did the front seat swap in my 96 L and found out that forester seats make you sit about 3inches higher then the L seats and for me being 6'6" that was a bit uncomfortable and my legs would hit the steering wheel!

If you had an auto in the 95, you can use the fozzys 5mt without swapping diffs

4.11f/d

The rear seat is shaped too differently to fit, much more so than just the latch relocation like in wrx/sti rears... nothing body wise will fit, but pull out the buttons and wiring for the fogs, heated seats, etc...

I'm using the seats in my car now, only 6'1, they're a bit higher as mentioned but I have the seat back all the way and could afford a click or two more... You get used to it tho

It's a shame that door panels don't fit, my favorite part about that car was the 1000s of random cubbys and pockets

What else swaps?

Control module center dash, will that swap? Bumpers, mud flaps, running boards, tow hitch... What other mechanical parts are worth swap as upgrade?

nothing body-wise will fit dude..

you can trim up the center console at the radio bezel to get it to line up but there's no real beneift, pull the heated seats and mirrors if it's an S, the trailer hitch.. carpet can be modded to fit easily if yours is toasted.. pull everything mechanical that's good, it'll all interchange with your legacy stuff and its nice to have backups..

pull fuses, maybe the whole fuse block if you ever want moar accessoriezzz in your L someday.. the visors are legit, pockets on pockets, you just have to move the latch over a bit, so much better, lol

maybe the rear cargo mat/carpet.. the offset on those wheels will cause the strut to sit on the tire, so you'll need spacers if you want to use them.. grab the strut/spring combo... you can lift the L up in the winter with little else.. if thats not your thing, at least you'll have tophats to use with STi coilovers.. door motors, keyless module fogs+relays and wiring, add another horn to the L (already prewired!)

is it a 5mt?

but you get the idea...then part out the rest of it on subaruforester.org

or just fix and mob that around and have 2 scoobs

Control module center dash, will that swap? NO

Bumpers, NO

mud flaps, NO

running boards, NO

tow hitch... NO

What other mechanical parts are worth swap as upgrade? just the drive train.

that's why i suggested the outback.

all of those parts would swap onto your legacy, perfect fit.

and the rear struts are taller too, or so i hear.

or just fix and mob that around and have 2 scoobs

or fix it and sell it, and then buy an outback.

I did get this installed in place of the useless (to me) cubby. The harness simply has a pigtail for power etc from the stereo harness which works perfect for the compass, baro, alt then it simply took bolting up the temp sensor from the front. I just pulled all the wiring so it hooks up exactly like in the forest.

I still wonder why you bought that as a donor car, they are completely different..I assumed you wanted the motor..but yeah I agree with troob, fix the gasket and drive it, doesn't look like its ready for the vultures.

After I take everything I want I'll part out the rest then cut the cat and scrap the rest for cash. I'll make my $500 back. This is my first grab and scrap and I'm really having fun taking it all a part.

Anyone direct me to removing the keyless system / FOB unit?

I also bolted up the driver seat and I much prefer the forester seats to mine so tomorrow I plan to finish that up. I also have other goodies going in :)

I spotted a 99 outback - it's going to scrap monday but the guy is letting me pull the hood (with scoop), front bumper cover (with lamps) and while I'm there it would make sense to pull anything else...

What all should I look for - non-mechanical...?

NM - someone just bought the whole thing - lucky...

I hope to have everything wrapped up by Monday and I will have pics and possibly a write up of the experience etc.

I have second gen struts and springs...

I took the wheels and tires off the Forester today. Turns out the 16" wheels are off a VW. They were running on 195/60/14 tires so I swapped to 225/50/16 and had them balanced etc. The car was OK - with 4 14" steel wheels, 4 rotors and pads, hydraulic jack and tools in the back there was no rubbing unless I drove over a bump or turned... Once I got all that weight out it was MUCH better, but when pushed a little aggressively I get the same rubbing over bumps and turns.

In reading up on suspensions related upgrades for lifting our legos I found the following which leads me to my question.

Let's say I want to **gasp** raise my car.

In that case, your best bet is swapping on BD/BG Outback struts and springs or second generation Forester struts and springs.

the Forester rear strut mount is lower than the Outback which will limit your tire size

It makes sense to me that with the rear strut and springs from the forest there will be a ~1" lift. When parked this might make it look like the rear is higher than the fronts BUT when driving and the suspension is compressed it should even out and improve yaw and look normal. As is I feel like there's already the impressions of butt sag and I really want this to work..

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

** ^ there is only rubbing in the rear! Fronts are perfect.
