watching the news this morning, and saw this. a 2012 STi driven by a 17 year old with his friends. i have driven on that highway before, it has very sharp turns and gets very wet in the rain. my thoughts were, he was speeding, didnt see the turn (which they call dead mans curve) and locked his rear brakes. parents bought the car for him, the 4 victims did not deserve any of this RIP, it horrible to see that out of everyone that made it was the idiot driver who should'nt have been driving from the first place, the parents should take some blame, i would never buy my 17 year old kid (if i had one) a 305 hp car for his first car. thoughts or ideas?

Holy Jesus! That's terrible! This is why you don't get a new driver a rally car and pack it with distracting friends, non of which have a developed prefrontal cortex to make logical decisions. So sad for their families!

Updated parts list since original part-out here.

its so sad that mommy and daddy dont do research and see what their stupid teen could end up like... in my area there have been so many subaru accidents that when i first started looking at first cars my father absoultely ruled out any sort of subaru. thankfully i convinced him an impreza was a safe reliable car and there wasnt a turbo so i couldnt get into trouble. he saw and heard about all the accidents and he knows that they are capable of. its so sad.

Young drivers will make mistakes - just try to make sure that the mistakes they make will be making only will damage their pride or at most be a few bruises.

Really sucks when there are people dying in an accident.

They should be liable for the negligent actions of their child that they enable.

There seems to be an assumption floating around here that if the same kid was in a less powerful car, he would have driven that car completely within its limits. Personally, I don't think that horsepower killed those people - bad judgement did. That's all it takes, and a person can exercise bad judgement in any car.

Yeah, but you don't really see teenagers trying push the limits of mom's Corolla at 4am do you?

The car definitely brings out riskier behaviors. Especially when peer pressure is involved (and also apparently marijuana according to latest news reports).

Very true.

It's a number of factors with bad judgment being the biggest.

A lower HP car MAY have discouraged him from trying to impress his friends ("look what this car can do"), certainly not a guarantee though.

I'll put it like this.

The parents are stupid for letting him drive the car.

The kid is stupid for thinking that he's Colin McRae with other people in the car.

Stupidity ruled over the majority here.

We all go through our "derp" moments but the difference between that person & us is that we're not stupid enough to cross that line when it comes to our limits, hence our current & continuing heartbeats & his lack of one (can't say lack of brain function because apparently, that was happening long before the accident.)

Don't get me get me wrong, I don't feel for the loss of the kid at all because stupid people like that contribute to higher insurance costs on all of us.

Challenge accepted.

Two 19-year-old men suspected of being under the influence of alcohol while racing their cars were taken to hospitals Monday after crashing into a home in Saratoga, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

Alan Chang of Saratoga and George Song of San Jose were both arrested at the hospitals on felony DUI and reckless-driving charges.

No residents were injured in the collision.

One of the cars first smashed into a 300-pound boulder, propelling it through a garage door, according to Sgt. Jose Cardoza. Both vehicles -- a BMW and a Toyota Corolla -- then careened into a house next door to the garage, with the Toyota ending up on top of the BMW.

That was in August. Here's one from last week...

Maldonado was driving her Toyota Corolla at an “unsafe speed” as she approached stopped traffic, California Highway Patrol Sgt. John Escobedo said. Maldonado veered to the left and collided with the back of a Jeep Cherokee, then continued west and struck a Nissan 240SX, he said.

Luna was in the back seat and not wearing a seat belt, Escobedo said. She sustained fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:40 p.m., according to Lt. Larry Dietz of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner.

That driver was 21, so not a teenager. The dead girl was 17 though.

ok, ok. So maybe a Corolla was a bad choice for my example. But history has shown that fast, sporty cars + teen drivers = death trap.

There's a good reason insurance is so high on wrx/STi's
