brakemans
My wagon's firewall grommet is round, and if I remember correctly, it's lower and closer to the center of the car. Not sure if it looks different on the Outback though. It was also a PITA to get to from the driver's side. You'd need a screwdriver to pry it off. There should be another one on the passenger side. Should look just like the one on the drivers side.

OnTheEllipse
thanks folks. whitetiger, do you know if there's metal behind there or is it just a straight shot into the footwell?

BAC5.2
There is a round one below the brake booster, too.
