Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.

SUMMARY:

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is conducting a limited regional recall for certain model year 2003-2005 Subaru Legacy, Outback, and Baja vehicles, as well as 2004-2005 Subaru Impreza (including WRX/STI) vehicles, that are currently or have ever been registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and equipped with Takata-brand passenger side air bag inflators. Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture. CONSEQUENCE:

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the vehicle occupants. REMEDY:

Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger side air bag inflators free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. NOTES:

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Thanks for posting this. We have a 2003 Legacy and since we are the 3rd or 4th owners, it is uncertain whether or not it has ever been registered in those areas.

Can I type the VIN into the Subaru website and know whether or not my car is affected?

^ No problem.

I'm not sure. I just got the recall notice from NHTSA this AM. This is the first I've heard of it.
