Manual gear box

Recommended Posts

I have a 05 gt with a manual trans. I like the car alot, good power, adequate handling and respectable mpg but the gearbox stinks. It takes sufficient force to change gears and is clunky when doing so. I don't think I have any major problems in that area and I have maintained the service on all parts of the car.. Differentials, trans, timing belt etc...I have put a extension on the shifter lever and heavy shift knob and this has help a good bit but I wanted to see if anyone has noticed this or has done anything to remedy. I drive alot of different cars on a consistant basis and the 05 gt gearbox is pretty bad. Any suggestions?

What fluid are you using in it ?

There are only a few recommended fluids to use.

Extra-S

Amsoil Severgear 75w-90

a cocktail of 3qt, Redline lightweight shockproof and .8qt Motul 300

And a new recommended straight Motul 300 which I'm going to go to this weekend.

If you have grinding the cocktail is prefered.

I have done the Extra-S and Severgear, they both work well.

I just got my Motul from Mike at http://www.AZPinstalls.com great customer service, just email him from his site. He can you anything you need for the car.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

I would definitely recommend the straight gear 300. We have put the Motul Gear 300 in a good amount of customer cars and they have said that they do feel the shifting is smoother. How many miles do you have on the trans and clutch?

Max thanks for the recommendation!!

What cars are you comparing it to?

I replaced the clutch around 20,000 miles ago, transmission has not been touched from my knowledge. I have around 125,00 on the car now. Changing the oil doesn't sound like a bad idea I have had some grinding, thanks for the recommendation on fluid. It's def worth a shot either way. Volkswagen, honda, mazda just to name some sticks that are in the same price range but considerably better. Although I have driven the wrx from the past few years and the transmission gearbox is good in that.

Those three car companies make better gear boxes then the Subi. A brand new STI doesn't feel very 'good' to me. I'm a snob, I know.

If the fluid has never been done it should be. I recall it needs to be done every 30K.

As Rey said, the Motul Gear 300 combines the smoothness of the Subaru ExtraS and the Protection of a full synthetic.

I am baffled though that it is tough to put into gear. Generally the complaints about the Subaru Gearboxes are that they are sloppy, not too stiff.

I would start with the fluid and work from there.

I have heard that changing your shifter bushings with aftermarket ones will help it feel a little crisper. I am thinking about doing those whenever I get a short shifter.

Transmission mount improved mine much more then the shifter bushings did
