Max Capacity
Most of us use the gates kit. You will find problems with any thing if you look hard enough. I used a Gates kit on my new short block. The first time I used a Dayco belt and pulleys I got from Advance Auto Parts. It's all good. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Yeah but he doesn't know if it was just the belt or the whole thing. Generally the belt doesn't snap, it's the tensioner that goes on you. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. VermontGT
I believe Gates makes the OEM belt. So I've heard on the internet. Nope. Mitsuboshi makes the OEM belt. You can identify it by the triangle logo with three stars inside if. They used to stamp their name on the belts as well but I believe now they only do that with the belts which they sell to the public, not the ones they are selling to manufacturers for assembly. V8Bait
I'm planning on getting mine done at the beginning of next year. After speaking with Suba performance here in Denver, i'm not so sure about the gates kits. I asked for a price quote from one of the mechanics over there, and he actually said that they have seen issues with those kits before. I've had a pretty good experience with them and always bring my own parts and he flat out said that i'd be better of using different parts because they have seen issues on more then one occasion. I just bought the gates timing belt kit with water pump from fredbeansparts for 315$ shipped. Kit is extremely nice and I have not heard of any issues with gates. I've used them on my 350whp sti and my 400whp dsm without any problems.

Maybe the altitude effects the Gates kits... Then just go to the auto parts store and buy whatever belt and kit they offer. In the overall schem of things. It's just as good. I had 60K on my Dayco stuff when I did the new short block. I still have the Dayco drive belts on. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. I Donated Too laff79 Posted November 16, 2012 I Donated Too Share Posted November 16, 2012 My buddy who's a Subaru dealership mechanic said the Gates kits are fine and has installed them on many Subarus with no problems. Mega Users seabass07 Posted November 16, 2012 Mega Users Share Posted November 16, 2012 Doesn't the OEM kit come with that single bearing pulley that likes to fail? I wouldn't put one of those back on my engine after seeing the condition that the original one was in...
AZP Installs
The belts are fine, it was more of an issue with the Tensioner, Idlers/Pulleys. I called metro performance this morning and they also confirmed, adding that OEM on the parts is the way to go (Gates belt okay, but Tensioner, Idlers/Pulleys, water pump should be oem). Both shops have a good reputation here in denver. One shop has built USRC/Rally America Rally cars and the other has the fastest sti in the state (10.59). That's two well known shops in denver saying no. Maybe it has to do with how their customers drive their cars? Not sure. Could be local mob mentality? I just haven't heard anything bad or seen anything bad with the gates kits. We use oem tstat a because we have seen all the aftermarket ones fail. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. Max Capacity
IMO most of the belt failures are caused by install errors. just like most clutch problems. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs.
