crayzd
2005 Subaru Legacy GT Limited formerly owned by me (nicknamed Ezra by my 3 year old). Wife was driving with my daughter and dog when the dash lights came on and the steering went out. Car died and they pushed it up into the parking lot. She called me and I told her to go wait in the shade. So, she gathered everyone up and went to the shade and within 5 minutes the car was engulfed. Luckily the fire department was close. It's totaled. Happened at 32nd St and Indian School. Happend around 3pm on June 20th. So, here it is. One 2005 Subaru Legacy, slight smoke smell and a little bit of faded paint. LOL At least I can get a new car now. 03LegacyWgn
from the pics looked like the turbo possibly overheated and exploded or something of that sort. let me know if the investigate im curious to hear the cause. p.s sorry for your loss, glad your wife and kids are safe and sound! 03 BH Mods: Group A Alt & Crank Pullys and end links, CIA, JDM L7 Grille, JDM HID lights, JDM rear tails Stromung CBE, KYB GR2's W/ H&R springs. ShadowImg
No doubt, glad to hear everyone is safe. I'm going to guess it probably can't be investigated at this point, but I'm curious if it started near that oil supply feed line that other people have had fires from on 07+ cars. Probably not, but if it is...
crayzd
I have no idea what started it. The car died, had to be pushed into the parking lot. She said that she saw smoke when she parked it. Wife called, told her to wait in the shade and not in the car (w/kid and dog). Less than five minutes later a guy comes up to her and says that is a fire under there. Within the next ten minutes the car is destroyed and put out. Luckily the fire dept was about a block away and the car wasn't near anything else. crayzd
I have owned a WRX and Legacy and those will most likely be the last Subaru's I ever own. Experiences like this tend to change your perspectives, especially when it just comes out of nowhere.

ehsnils
It would be good for all of us if it's possible to determine the cause. So we can keep our eyes open and possibly avoid fatalities. This has the potential for causing a recall, but you never know.

Jon in CT
You need to report this to SOA (1-800-SUBARU3) and to NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI). You can notify ODI by filing a complaint at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm or by calling their vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236. I searched ODI's complaints database for 2005 Legacy/Outback fires and found two reports (see http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints/results.cfm?odi_ids=10151244%2C10170888&Search=Search&SearchType=QuickSearch&summary=true). ehsnils
i wonder what they will say if its modded though? I doubt that they will say much as long as the modification isn't done in a very sloppy and/or unsafe way. You will probably have more to worry about from the insurance company. Just be straight with the DOT people, because it will help their investigation if you provide them with information about modifications. Fires and accidents are tricky - and if a foreign object (like one from a modification) is found then that can lead them into the wrong track for the cause. nm
i wonder what they will say if its modded though? They'll investigate the fire. If it looks like it was caused by a mod, they'll say that and stop investigating. If it looks like it was caused by something else, they look for similar fires. If there are similar fires, they'll call for a recall if they id a source.
acqui
I had the exact same experience, but with an Audi S4. It burned to the ground. Thankfully, I was able to get my dad out of it before the flames reached the interior. For some odd reason, the doors locked automatically (I was told this is done in case the car is submerged in water) It was idling for about 5 minutes before it happened. Within 48 hours, I got a letter from Audi of America asking me if I intended to bring a lawsuit against them etc. I think sometimes we just have certain makes of cars that we haven't got luck with. Audi is one such for me. I am glad no one got injured in your case.
