godwhomismike
Can I just do the pads - or would the rotors need to be cut? I only have 21,000 miles on it, and when I went for inspection the mechanic told me I only have a couple of thousand miles left on the pads. Guest Gitster
Wow. 5EAT FTL. I have almost 50k on my original pads, but they need replacement soon. Now a days it is sometimes cheaper to replace the rotors than to have them turned. I dont know if thats the case for the Legacy. But for some other cars, Rotors are only $20/piece. You should most definitely get them turned, if you have any sort of warping or vibration. I think I am going to replace my rotors w/ my pads just because they have lasted so long. Guest Gitster
^^^^ Granted they last longer on the 5MT, but I have a LOT of highway miles.
Guest Gitster
My dealership has an online catalog. For some reason they didnt have the Legacy, but a set of front pads for the Tribeca was $99, FWIW.

godwhomismike
I got 9 months left with the car, the cheapest way possible to get me to the end of the lease, without compromising my safety.
godwhomismike
Do they have to be turned? Also, only the front brakes were checked - do all 4 need to be done at the same time, if the backs are still fairly meaty?
Guest Gitster
If your rotors are in bad shape, they will eat your pads quicker. Depends how many miles you plan on puttin on the car in 9 months. To turn the rotors, I believe they remove them and put them on a lathe.

I'll probably put about 7K - 8K miles on it before turning it back in. Next two weeks I will be doing a lot of driving - to Atlantic City, and then home, and then to the Poconos. Probably 700-800 miles in the next two weeks .
godwhomismike
I have two people (1 is a certified mechanic) who are willing to help me install the pads, and remove the rotors if necessary. I was wondering
Guest Gitster
I would say you gotta do all 4 pads. You don't want better braking power in the front, it would throw off the braking balance.
RangerMan
$99.30 set of front and $99.70 for set of rears . That is about $30 more total than the Hawk HPS pads I put on. I did not turn the rotors, they were fine, just flushed with ATE superblue and bedded according to Hawk's instructions. Took me about 2 hours with a beer or two to get them done. I think I paid $180 for pads, ATE super blue and shipping from tire rack.
godwhomismike
ok Autozone has them very cheap for non-metallic pads: Duralast Brake Pads - Front: (MKD1078) $29.99 Duralast Gold Brake Pads - Rear: (DG1114) $32.99 .

godwhomismike
Duralast. I think thats probably an oxymoron As long as they can last 8000 miles and 9 months, I don't really care. What do you guys think? Or do you think they'll fail on some curvy road .
godwhomismike
I called a local place, didn't get the name of the brakes, and they are asking for: $65 front $53 rear .
RangerMan
Duralast are fine. I have used them and the wearever parts on other vehicles that needed brakes. Never had an issue with them. Would usually put another 20k on before I would get rid of the car. Not performance pads. That price sounds reasonable (at 65 F and 53 R). You should be able to get pads and flush for $100. Make sure they don't slam you with extra fees.
