mattg - can you post part numbers? thanks.

I don't have them but I'm sure you can figure it out on Yakima's website. I'm running 48" cross bars and a 44" fairing. Fatcat 6 snowboard rack and Raptor bike racks.

Hey all you guys with baskets. I have an '07 Spec B, and I've been debating on installing a basket. But I'm on the fence. How's the gas mileage and the noise? My buddy just put a Yack rack on his '09 Impreza with some sort of bike rack and he says it's super loud. He doesn't have a fearing, does the fearing make a huge difference with the noise?

So I am assuming a hitch mounted rack would help reduce that deficit? I wonder what the outcome would be if you were to somehow mount the rack system to the C pillars and trunk, or strictly the C pillars (for a usable trunk). While it may look different, it would certainly help reduce the initial wall that it creates as the wind hits it going over your windshield. Anything of a smaller size (skis and snowboards) would be able to fit perfectly fine, they might make your car a little wider, but not by too much. Bikes would definitely be protruding up into the wind that is rushing over the roof of the car. This is strictly me thinking out loud, and outside of the box, so please feel free to help with any knowledge you have. The biggest question now is whether the increased drag on the rear of the car would hurt your mileage more than having the wall on top of the roof..

update, I do not like the idea of widening the car, but possibly lengthening it instead. While the trunk may not be usable with the skis, boards or bikes on the rack, taking them off you would still be able to use the trunk, especially if you made a rack with a hinge to allow the part connected to the trunk to fold up separately from the trunk, allowing you to then open your trunk. The hinge would then be able to lock back down in place and allow you to put your skis back on when you are done accessing your trunk. All of this probably does not make sense and I will need to try and make models... Sorry guys.. (again, just thinking out loud and trying to think outside of the box)

I just put my old rack on my Legacy. I am just getting alot of wind noise. I have always had racks on my cars. I do have the fairing as well. All I carry is a surfboard. So, I just have pads on the bars. I have never had a problem with wind noise?

Summertime:cool:

This setup loses me about 2-3 MPGs. Add that to the 2 MPGs lost from new 225/45/17s I'm down about 5... I really should remove the rack for trips home.

I installed a Thule kit recently on my '09 LGT. I went against manufacturer recommendation & bought 47" Aero bars rather than the 53". I think they fit great--there's only about 1"-2" extending past the feet (towers) on either side of the bars front & back.

I went to a paint film place & picked up a bunch of scrap so I could cover the areas where the towers are installed. I also picked up a piece for the eventual installation of a fairing.

480 towers

RB47 bars

599XTR Big Mouth (still waiting on Aero bar adapter kit)

Pics to come...
