Waste gate

Recommended Posts

These are pics. of my VF40 turbo with almost 175k on it. The waste gate valve is off center about 0.030". Is this normal, just wondering. I have no problem hit or holding boost target. I'm thinking it mite be made that way to help with boost creep. What do you guys think.

Well, it's normal among high mileage turbos. There has been quite a few.

Check your logs. Typically you won't make the usual boost on low end, and too high on the high end. 3rd gear log, mine would do about 6 psi at 3500 and hit 16 at redline.

My waste gate valve is off center of the valve seat, about 0.030. The play I'm looking for. Is how easy the WG shaft moves in & out. causing it to be misaligned. No play when cold. Need to check when hot. If there no play then. Then it was assemble this way from the factory.

Don't mean to nitpick with the terminology, but are you referring to the wg actuator arm? Seems like GTT is on the right diagnosis track. IHI may not have the absolute BEST qc reputation, but I doubt it was assembled with the flapper that far off center.

While your in there with the dp off (even though this isn't directly related to the matter at hand), how is the main shaft play with 175k just out of curiosity?

*edit*

I try again when the turbo is hot.

None that I can feel or see by using my finger. Yes the WG shaft that the flapper is welded to. I can"t move it, in & out when cold. I'll try when it's hot. With 15k OCI, it will be ironic that I replace my turbo for this. And have zero shaft play on the turbine shaft.:spin::spin::spin::rolleyes:

Just walked out to the shed, my old vf40, the waste gate covers the whole port and the arm has about .020 play. (up/dn,in/out) IMO just enough to let it open and close smoothly. I doubt it's much more play then new.

How did the Tune work out ? (Mike closed on his house Friday.)

Don't know. I haven't got it yet. If he's closing on his house last week. He mite of had not enough time the tweak their TA AP tune for my Mods.

In his defense, I will say he looked to be in a hurry when I saw him the Lowe's parking lot.

I have to say, I don't think I've ever seen him walking so fast. He normally fit's into the Tuner profile, never seems to get excited, looks at things, analyzes them, then makes a decision.

I think I found the problem. Look at my pic(top) & Max Capacity pic.(bottom) Look at the size difference in the spacer used between the waste gate flapper & the turbo housing wall. I think mine was assemble wrong from the factory.

Update, waste gate finally it hit the wall.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l293/HAMMERDOWNGT/0523141311_zps5cf4c281.jpg

Sense I'm going to replace it with a VF-52. I decide to see if I can move the waste gate back where it belongs.

Success;

Tools:

-Oxy-Acetylene torch with rosebud or cut torch

-hammer

-drill with 1/8" & 3/16 bit

-3/16"x3/4" new roll pin

-Good bench vise

Directions;

-Remove turbo from car.

-Remove turbine (hot side) housing from turbo assy.

-Clamp in vise

-Drill out roll pin, 1/8" bit (see green arrow). That hold waste gate sleeve place.

-Heat turbine housing around the waste sleeve area, until cherry red.

-Hit wastes gate arm with hammer (The small arm welded to Waste gate Swing Valve Linkage), why'll the housing is red hot. Until waste gate flap is centered.

Note: This mite take a couple heating & beatings to get it done.

-Once centered, let housing cool. After it cooled, dill out roll pin hole to 3/16". ( Went with bigger roll pin to catch more of the waste gate sleeve. Sense the smaller roll pin failed to hold waste gate sleeve in place).

-Hammer home new roll pin, until flush with surface.

Note:Make sure your waste gate moves freely, before reassembly.

Disclaimer:

Do it at your own risk. I'm replacing my turbo & had nothing to lose. But was successful in re-centering waste gate flapper valve, With no damage to turbine housing & waste gate swing valve linkage.

What are you doing with the old one?

Running it until I can get my VF-52 from Six Star Speed with their high performance CHRA. http://www.6starspeed.com/vfwrtu.html

They are currently out of stock. And see if they give me $100 core refund. Like they offer if I bought their VF40-5R http://www.6starspeed.com/vfrhbabecoup.html

my original turbo seemed to have been missing that spacer as well. maybe there is a significant percentage of us who've encountered this same problem?

After diving in to it, there is no spacer. That's the sleeve for the waste gate swing valve linkage assy.http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTUwMFgxNTAw/z/T~8AAOxy3lFRBp~E/$%28KGrHqJ,%21lYFDOG6t1lTBRBp+EPl%29w~~60_35.JPGhttp://s.ecrater.com/stores/221197/50026fb7c8ad6_221197n.jpg

If the roll pin fails to do it job, over time the waste gate sleeve will start to move to the right. As the turbine housing start to expand, do to hot exhaust gases & pressure.

Sorry for bumping this old thread, but searching I felt it was more relevant than making my own thread.

I had the exhaust apart last night and also notice my wastegate sleeve is shifted.

How did the redrilling to 3/16" hold up over time?
