Spec Clutch question

GTLegacy05

Recommended Posts

Ok so I bought the spec stage 2 clutch for a 05 legacy gt forgetting that the clutch setup I had in the car already was a wrx setup, so the clutch don't match up to the flywheel. Does anyone know what flywheel will work with this clutch that is fairly cheap? or do I have to use the spec flywheel?

I would call Spec and ask them.

We can all only guess.

Who did you buy the clutch from ? may be they will exchange it for the correct one.

I'm guessing the Clutch was set up for the same bolt circle as the stock dual mass FW.

When I ordered my replacement I made sure Mike at AZPinstalls.com knew I had a Spec LWFW. My Spec LWFW uses the OEM torxPlus 50 bolts, as WXR and 07 Legacy FW bolts are to big. (hex head)

He may be someone you want to contact and ask too.

well I just decided to go with the spec flywheel and we got it back together, but trans wont go into gear when the car is on and is pretty hard to get into gear when the car is off. I'm not sure if I installed the clutch the right way so tearing it apart again monday to see whats up since everything else seems to be working properly from the outside. also going to order a tranquil kit and install it while i'm taking it out again.

Are you sure the clutch fork didn't fall off the pivot ball, mine did and the tranny won't shift and acted like yours. That was last summer when I pulled the tranny to have it rebuilt and used the same clutch that was in it. I did not touch the clutch but the fork fell off the ball.

The piston from the slave cylinder is supposed to move horizontal not on a angle.

I thought even if the decal was wrong the disc would not fit with the PP. The springs go toward the PP.

So the decal was on the wrong side.

Just to verify, the flat side goes towards the FW.

The springs fit into the opening in the PP.

See post #16 for a update, all clutches are not the same.

Yea I put the side that was marked towards the flywheel and it was marked wrong. Everything else moves fine.

You know...you try to give someone the benefit of the doubt that it's just a one time occurence, but this is the second time I've heard of this happening to a LGT. The first time was mine!

I hope you have better luck with yours in the long run. Mine is starting to make noise just 1.5 years after my fiasco. Spec didn't seem to care when I originally told them about it either.

I hope I do to. I almost thought I was going to have to spend money I don't have to buy a different clutch, but so far so good.

I'm not sure if it would of drove with the sprung side facing the FW like it was marked because we didn't try adjusting the pedal till we turned the clutch around the other way, but my buddy said every clutch he's done its been flat side against FW like Max Capacity said and I also found a video of a spec clutch and spec flywheel being put into a different car and they put the sprung side towards the PP, so i'm assuming they either have it marked wrong or this clutch setup will work either way idk?

Here's my Spec 2

Oh yea, I see the springs fit into the FW. I have to look at the Spec 2+ that I took out, I think it was different. It's on the trailer outside.

Update, I checked the old Spec2+ the springs stick out into the PP side.

The sprung side on the 2+ also faces the flywheel.

I wish I would've gone with my gut and called Spec before I installed it because the 2 (which I had before) and 2+ look exactly the same, except for the friction material on the non-sprung side.

I had originally installed the 2+ clutch disc with the sprung side facing the PP ( as the labeling indicated). When I took it back out a week later, I could see where the PP diaphragm springs had rubbed the clutch disc. I have the pics at home.

Oh Yea,,, lol, I did not install the Spec 2+, the dealer did. The FW side sticker is on the flat side. To be honest, I can't remember how it was when I took it off.

But if I would have seen the FW sticker looking at me when I pulled the PP, I think I would have noted that in my memory, which being 57y/o is not that good any more...;)

I can't view the pictures here at work. I have 4500 miles on the Spec 2 as installed in the pictures.

It seems there is a difference in the way the Spec 2 and the Spec 2+ get installed.

So wait did I have it in right the first time then? As of right now the flat side is to the flywheel and the sprung side is to the pp I've already put like almost 200 city driving miles on it.

They should be installed the same way. The sprung side faces the flywheel in each case.

The sprung side is the side that sticks out like a brake rotor top hat. The clutch disc in Max's picture is labeled correctly.

FWIW I thought my issues were involving something outside of the trans (slave cyl, adjustment, etc), until the day I gave it some gas. There was an awful noise when I got on it a tiny bit above 3k.

that's how I had it installed the first time and it was marked like that, but from a previous post and what my buddy said(who's a mechanic) that the flat side went towards the flywheel, so I figured that was marked wrong and we switched it so the flat side is against the Flywheel side. I've been driving it the enitre week and like I said almost have 200 miles on it I've taken it above 3k once or twice and haven't noticed any noise. what does the noise sound like?

Mine sounded sort of like when you unzip something very fast, but much louder and more raw.

Here's the pics of mine. This is after I took it out one week after the initial install. There is only about 25 miles on it which is the distance to and back from my buddy's shop.

Notice in the background my old spec stg 2 clutch disc, with the correct labeling. If you also notice, the blue "ring" on the pp springs on the 2+. That is from rubbing on the sprung side of the disc.

Here's the clutch disc. You can clearly see where the pp springs rubbed the clutch disc spring housing.
