2005 Outback XT | Wheel Fitment Included

Recommended Posts

Having owned a wrx in the past, i finally "upgraded" to an '05 Outback XT Limited 5mt. While I'm very familiar with wrx's and sti's, the outback/legacy platform is entirely new to me. I'll use this thread to post my progression with the car, and also voice the many questions I may have along the way!

I'm aware that to some this will be too extreme and unappreciated. To those, I ask that you kindly bash respectfully  To the rest, I'm very open to constructive criticism! Hope you enjoyed! More to come.

I saw many people on this forum interested in lowering their cars, fitting wider wheels/tires, etc.. So I figured I'd snap a few pictures as I worked through the process. Sorry for the amateur pictures.

After realizing that fitting 10" wide wheels with a low offset would not be an easy fix, the car began surgery.

With the fenders removed, I began trimming the fender flare. Cutting away about an inch of plastic led to a significant amount of clearance. The next issue was the fender itself. I cut away about an inch of the fender (vertically from the flare) to provide maximum clearance.

I cut about an inch off of the flare...

And about an inch off the fender, providing maximum clearance. After the cut was sanded down, I glued on a strip of 5/32" vac line to avoid the possibility of metal/tire contact.

Wiring harness tucked higher just for safekeeping. Probably an unnecessary step for most.

The rears were next, unfortunately I forgot to get pictures of this, but its easily explainable. The rear flares were trimmed just as the fronts were. I began cutting the fenders in a similar fashion as I did on the fronts, before realizing this is not the best plan of action. A simple roll did the trick, rolling the lips flat against the quarter. Some minor cutting was needed around the bumper tab. The rears are more difficult to roll nicely, as they are double layered vs. one layer in the front. Fortunately, while the fender flare is rather inconvenient in the process, it hides the mess quite nicely.

i don't know numbers at the moment. Front camber plates are maxed, and rears are all natural. My alignment is on hold for now, as I'm waiting to remove body spacers and install my roll center and anti lift kit.

^ that shouldn't be too hard. what size tire?

i'm trying to get good pictures soon, but i need to get the rear lower to be happy. any opinions?

my rear coilovers are maxed, with the springs fully dropped and one lock collar removed.

i have yet to remove the body spacers, but i don't know if that will lower the car any?

I'll be on 225/40 but i was hopping not to cut as much as you did! I'll see when I install them! Wheels should be here next week!! The spacer wont help you lower the car but you probably could order shorter/stiffer coils from companies like Swift!

you shouldn't have to. 225/40s are relatively tall, in my opinion, but i don't think you'll run into issues with height clearance. just tuck the wiring harness to be safe. my issue was width clearance.

i already have bc's extreme low kit, i don't know if they offer anything shorter.

Beautiful car with lots of hard work into it. I'm also never a fan of this look but man it looks sweet on your OBXT. Keep us updated with whatever else you do to it!

Looks awesome dude!

Damn you and your fender flares!!!

Car looks great! Wish it were this easy with the stock body LGT's!

It is actually harder on our cars, contrary to popular belief. The flares look awesome but they don't make it any easier.

They give you an extra 2 inches of clearance. For some reason I don't see how it isn't any easier.

I'd much rather trim plastic then having to pull sheet metal and repaint.

thanks joe! as for the flares... sure they give you a wider, more aggressive look. but they truthfully just get in the way.

if the flares were metal, and part of the fender, rather than attached by plastic clips and tape, it would without a doubt be way easier.

This one thousand times. The fender itself is still the exact same size as the Legacy GT fender, the flare just sticks on to the outside of it.

Okay so your complaining about 2 inches of extra clearance? Trim the fender underneath the flare and trim the plastico on the inside of the flare and you easily have 2 inches of extra clearance.

Smart comments don't get you anywheres in life. Learn it young and keep it with you. ;)

So your saying your fenders with the flare are the same dimensions as that of the stock legacy fenders? Mind proving this notion by measuring from the outside of the flare to the strut body or something else of the same

Then why do OBS' come with different wheel dimensions?

no one is complaining in here, we are simply informing based on our personal experience, as you asked. on that note, let's keep the smart comments and sarcasm out of here.

and referring to SublimeJoe's comment, I think he is suggesting that you didn't read the OP, as I have pictures of the exact process that you mentioned.

I read the OP. I'm curious to know whether or not the OBS flares add any width to to the stock LGT style fenders.

Surely they can't be the same width.
