left rear wheel speed sensor

The one on my wagon needs replacing.

 

Just had the dealership read the code while they were re-bleeding the brakes after they replaced all the brake lines.

 

The new sensor will be in Saturday morning.

 

Looks like a easy thing to replace. Page 3935 in the 2005 service manual.

 

Any one done one yet ?

I've taken it out on my 08 after I replaced the hub assembly and pulled a code for foreign object on sensor. Surprisingly, it didn't give me any problems. Pb is your friend and definitely take your time. They like to seize up in the hole which isn't that big of a deal since you are replacing it, but you don't want to take the hub out to get all the plastic out of the hole.

i had to take it out from the hub when i did the wheel bearings spray the bolt with penatrant and replace it with a new 10mm bolt from auto part or hardware store. You can get the sensor out with a screw driver... just go slow so you dont break the plastic. I actually will need to do this again soon because i snapped a wheel stud and i need to repress the stud or replace the bearing

Should have said the main question is, where is the connector located at the chassis for this speed sensor?

 

Photobucket was down this morning, I couldn't find my photo's of the left rear hub in the wheel bearing thread because of PB being down or in my pictures at home this AM. I know I have a nice picture with a brake backing plate removed, just can't get to it...now here at work I can't view PB any ways.

Yea, that's what I plan on doing. ;) There is a youtube video of replacing one on a 08 WRX, I'll bet there pretty close to what I'll find.

 

When it warms up a little outside I'll head out and take it out. Currently its 29F outside supposed to be in the mid 50's later.

Old one is out. you can see where that shield from the picture above has been hitting it.

 

I tried pulling the hub assembly but rust and whatever was being a PITA, I had enough of playing with that. I'll let the dealer's tech get it out, after all they did just put a new caliper on the left rear for free for just a broken bleeder screw.

 

With Aero-Kroil the three bolts came out with little fuss. I did hit the top of the ratchet a few time with a hammer while loosening them and had to go loss and tighten a couple times just to be safe.

From the inside looking up and out, the small black wire in the back is the sensor that goes just a couple of inches further to the right in the photo,

That black connector is it, it was pretty easy to un-clip and slide them apart.

Yes, it would be easy except for why is it being hit by that shield ?

I wonder how that old one is getting hit by the shield on the axle ? The wheel is back on now, they can bend that shield back Wednesday

I have a 2 jaw puller, I may try that tomorrow, to pull the hub and rusty brake backing plate off the LCA.

 

See how the weather is in the AM.

If you are referring to the metal dust shield in your pic from doing the hub years ago, you should be able to hit it back into place. They are typically pressed onto the axles but can become loose over time. Or, your bearing is bad and it's allowing the axle to move with the hub assembly.

Yes that shield on the axle, The bearing has not been making any noise and felt tight yesterday, I 'm sure it is not the issue. That's why I don't want to use my slide hammer to remove it.

 

I just have to fight rust to remove the hub.

 

Of course it rained over night, so I'll wait a few until the sun drys the driveway.

All set, the 2 jaw puller and hitting the hub top and bottom and a few cranks of the puller and the hub came right out.

Used a 3/8 extension and hammer to bang those rub spots back in.

I wiped all that rust off and the bearing was clean and smooth again.

 

 

Just did the test drive, so far so good.
