Transmission or Clutch sounds

Hi All,

 

I have an 05 Leg GT with 150K miles. The clutch was replaced at about 100K with the SMFW setup and the snout kit. Recently, have begun to have a unique sound coming from either the transmission or the clutch. Loudest in 1st and 2nd, and then quiets down. I have a video of the sound and hope that I am posting it properly to get some feedback. Not sure if this is the throw-out bearing needing to be replaced or possibly the transmission bearings.

Definitely not the throwout bearing, that would only make noise when the clutch is pressed.

 

Since your noise is speed dependent, I'd be leaning towards the output shaft bearings or center differential bearings. The center differential bearings are not that hard to do.

Thank you for the feedback. The fluid is Extra S. I looked at my records and the clutch was done at about 110K, not 100. They changed it at that point, so 40K on the fluid.

 

On the sound, definitely much louder than a typical gear whine. The video really doesnt do it justice. This is my daughters car now and she mentioned something was getting loud. Because of some maintenance to her van, my wife had to drive it last week and said "sounds like a plane taking off when I first start up from a stop".

 

How can I narrow down the list? Tough to coordinate someone else driving it so I can stick my head out the window. :-)

Extra-S is changed every 30,000 miles.

 

The dealer can now buy it in quarts. Look below for a thread about tranny fluid.

I went home at lunch to get another video and had it out on a smaller highway. Started the vid and just as I was climbing a small hill, "something" slipped and started whooshing/grumbling for lack of a better term. Felt very similar to the throw out bearing letting loose when I was driving it 40K ago. That took out the snout, so I limped it home today. Felt strange so I didnt push it.

 

Here are links to a few vids. The first one is driving on the road throttle on and then off, and then on. That sound has been with the clutch since the change to the SMFW, though seems louder now (pre my drive today). Not sure if this is the "chatter" people talk of, but to me, just the sound of the "new" clutch.

The second vid is when I had on the highway and going up this hill. Hear the sound change about 4 seconds in and then this whoosh/grumbling.

When I was safely on my street, I checked a few things for sound. When I started up in 1st, the "airplane whine" was much less noticeable. And very little in 2nd. Car shifts fine, gets going fine, no excess noise at idle, just doesnt feel right.

 

My thought is that the TOB is going and just playing a little game. Fine one minute, an issue the next, but cant take a chance that it goes and takes the snout again. Probably a tranny case at that point.

I think the OP should ride in the back seat while the car is driven. You can hear different things from back there.

 

When my rear diff let go, I swore it was a tranny issue. After my buddy opened it up and said nothing is wrong, you better check the rear diff...that's when chunks came out of the rear diff drain hole.

 

Ride in the back seat.
