Robb
My motor spun a rod bearing after a new short block went in 7,000 miles, so I pulled my motor yesterday to get a start on that. The throw out bearing was already making noise, so I was planning on doing that and a clutch at the same time. I separated the case from the trans and noticed that there was already a sleeve kit over a (what seems to be) demolished snout. Can anyone tell me about this throw out bearing and sleeve? It appears to be a TSK kit, but I'm not sure. People keep telling me to buy a new kit and that kits are made to match the bearing... but I'm not entirely sure that's correct. I've read posts like this about the TSK1 kit that states they're just Toyota bearings. Also, I noticed that the clutch fork was just kind of hanging out there. It was not attached to the bearing or have a pivot like the 6mt does. Is the 'free floating' like this normal? Any insight is appreciated.
drunkinmonk
Good luck. Subscribed. I think I'm in the same situation. Engine and TOB issues at the same time.
Robb
I wouldn't be so mad if I got more use than four months out of the car before I spun bearings on a brand new shortblock. But it's whatever, only hurts my wallet (and knuckles). This car has earned my "easiest motor pull ever" rating, lol.
Max Capacity
PM Underdog. Have him send you a TOB for the TSK3 Kit. If its a 5mt, it should have a pivot ball. There is also a spring clip that holds the TOB on the fork. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. ras06LGT
The clutch fork should definitely have a pivot. There is a ball stud that attaches to the inside of the transmission.
Robb
There is also a spring clip that holds the TOB on the fork. Could the clips not being on have resulted in the premature wear? I'm assuming as much, given the extra play and travel. Should there be any lubrication between the TOB and snout?
Max Capacity
I do grease the snout so the TOB will slide easier. Not sure about the spring clip. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it.
