Swapping Liberty/Legacy ECU to add OBD2?

Recommended Posts

So the title should give a good hint.

I have a 95 Liberty (Legacy in the US) and it does not have OBD2, instead it uses SSMI

I am wondering since OBD2 was mandatory in the US since 96 i think? would it be possible to swap an OBD2 ecu into my SSMI liberty?

Or maybe could i use a later generation ECU?

i don't know much, but in the US,

the ECU must match the wiring harness.

the harness changed for the 96 - 97 years, (way different than 95)

and again for the 98 - 99 years. (charcoal canister to the rear.)

so if the ECU does not match,

you will get error codes, usually ghost codes.

the engine will run fine, (maybe not with a 95 ECU)

but you will have codes.

again, this is for the US.

but if you swap the harness as well as the matching ECU,

in theory it should work.

but that is a lot of work, imho.

why do you want obd2?

does the 97 liberty have obd2 in your land?

Hi johnegg,

Thanks for replying, I heard that some legacy's had OBD2 on the 95 models but not many...

I only really wanted OBD2 to connect it to my phone through Torque, would be cool but if it's too much work i won't worry.

Unfortunately we didn't get OBD2 till around the 3rd or 4th gen :( Turbo models had OBD2 around 96 i think...

I'm doing a manual conversion shortly and in the process I'm going to swap out the dash from a GX into my LX (GX had much nicer materials) so it really wouldn't be too much work as I'm going to swap harnesses anyway... The only problem i see is buying the ecu + harness when i could spend my money on better upgrades.
