Leaking oil from AMR cxr500 turbo

Recommended Posts

Just got this turbo from importimage. Had issues with fitment from the get go.

I have been having issues with oil smell inside the cabin. for a while i thought it was from the drain pipe gasket, but just recently decided to investigate the issue. I stuck a mirror right under the turbo where i thought it was leaking and what i saw really upset me. The drain pipe is dry as can be. But the oil is coming from the center section where the v-bad connector connects the center section to the exhaust housing. Quite a bit of oil there.

Is the turbo seal busted?

AMR will not respond to me at all. I am pretty damn upset about this. really regret buying this turbo now.

My buddy had the EXACT same thing happen to his cxr500 brand new out of box. Sent it back to AMR for a fix. I believe it was a seal issue. He received it back "fixed" and it's been sitting in his garage ever since, he's trying to sell it. He now has a blouch 480XT

I just went through a similar experience with TWO Tomioka Racing TD06-20G turbos. After 200 or so miles after installing both of them, the seals blew. Awesome smoke show at every start-up from the exhaust.

I ended up going with a more reputable brand for my third turbo that came in yesterday.

i also installed a restriction in the oil feed on some turbo with this problem, there could also be a blockage in the oil drain some where or excessive crank case pressure for what ever reason (blow-by) (funky boost leak)

Now that's thinking out of the boxer!

Well, this turbo came with a wrong drain pipe in the first place.

What is a good alternative?

Amr contacted me and said to send them the turbo with invoice and they will "investigate" what they issue is.

****, why not send me a new one. That would be good customer service.

Now my car will be all taken apart again.

What are some good reputable alternatives with sti style turbo?

Well, got the turbo evaluated and apparently it had a "tiny" exhaust seal leak. Thats what AMR told me that it was tiny but it sure as hell was big enough to make my car stink of oil inside.

Apparently they fixed the seal and tested the turbo and going to overnight it to me.

Yeah i know, but the good news is that Josh at importimage made it all better for me. His customer service is probably the best in the industry, the guy works 24/7. He contacted them for me and made them ship it to me. So i hopefully will still get it tomorrow. AMR -1 Importimage +10.

Got the turbo at 9am today thanks to Import Image. I could not believe how terribly it was packed, i am surprised the turbo did not crack. The drain pipe was bent btw. And drain line and coolant lines were full of packing peanuts so i had to use tweezers to remove pieces of packing material from the lines.

  • 3 weeks later...

A little update. The f-ing piece of shit is leaking again. It took about a week of daily driving till it started to leak again, same place, same amount.

If you are considering an AMR turbo don't buy it. There are a lots of other option that are better quality and have way better customer support.
