What'd you do to your FIRST Gen. Subaru today?

Recommended Posts

replaced collapsed lifter, it was toast, now it intermittently clicks, no rhyme or reason. I didnt read up on bench bleeding until after though... any tips on getting the air out

Update should have read a bit first. Took it apart and all four intake hlas lost fprime. Blew it all out with air. bench bled hla individually re assembled and primed them for 20 seconds with the coil unplugged. Good to go and all quiet.

No, you need to redo the HLAs and it'll be fine.

Wait, so the motor may actually be find still? As soon as it started making that noise he immediately shut it off and never turned it back on. My roommate said that after he did the lifters it was running amazing, then a few minutes later it was even worse than before.

Here is a video of the issue before he replaced the lifters:

I have a set of those I need to rebuild. How did you know the pistons were bad?

You will find out when you attempt to remove them. Three were corrosion pitted past where the seal rides. They were hard to remove without messing anything up. Ill be using lots of hitemp wurth lube under the dust covers as they see a bunch of salt here

On my roadtrip to so-cal for some new years fun. Took a 2015 STI at two consecutive stoplights with two passengers. First run was an easy launch and nearly even, second run was with launch control/flat shifting which gave me a car length thru 1st-3rd. He was quite suprised at what had just beat him. Probably going to be heading to COBB now. Nearly maxing my 440 injectors down here at sea-level, time for a bigger turbo also.

Installed a 2006 WRX wagon 20mm front sway bar and the end links that came with it. My stock end links were shot with 160k miles on them and the new ones only had 60k. They were identical to the Legacy links. The stock WRX bushings wont work on our cars, too big, so I was able get the stock bushings, which were in pretty good shape, stretched over the new bar and clamped down using the stock brackets. The bar fit PERFECTLY!

So the handling improvement is significant. I need a bigger rear bar before I really start pushing it in corners, but I jumped on this when I had the chance and cant complain spending $40 on the bigger bar and new-ish end links from a local guy.

A friend of mine drove his '94 first gen (chassis code BJ, manufactured June 1993, 5-speed, ~190,000 miles) Legacy wagon from San Francisco to Austin last month. When he got here, I was amazed the car made it. He knows absolutely nothing about cars, so I've been helping him take care of various issues.

Here's all we've done so far.

His headlights were so oxidized I couldn't tell if they were on at night, so we sanded and polished them.

http://www.samos.org/HeadlightsBeforeAfter.jpg

Next we pulled off the rocker arm assemblies and completely cleaned and refilled the lifters. I'd say about half of them were stuck. His rocker arm assemblies had so much slop in them, and the clatter was so loud. That made a huge difference in how the engine runs. I'm pretty impressed with how easy it is to work on this 2.2L boxer motor. I'm used to working on 928s and 300ZXs.

He had a check engine light that some kid told him was probably just an O2 sensor and not to worry about it. So I showed him how to get the actual codes, and the only code that popped up was actually the knock sensor. I found one on Amazon for $15. It took me about 10 minutes to swap it since it's in a pretty inconvenient location. The old one was cracked and nasty. Sure enough, that cleared up the CEL.

He had a horrible exhaust leak on the passenger side. He said he had to drive with the windows open since he smelled exhaust in the car. And that side sounded like a Harley. I took off the front half of the exhaust system, and the passenger manifold just flopped around on the pipe only held on by the heat shield. So I cut off the heat shield and found this:

It looks like someone tried to repair it with JB Weld or something similar. I took it to a welder to have it evaluated, and he ended up repairing it and only charged me $25. I of course completely cleaned the mating surfaces and used new gaskets. No more leaks, and the car now runs very quietly and smoothly.

His windshield wiper arms were rusty and gross, so I took them all off, sanded them down, primered and painted them. They look like new now. I also installed new wiper blades.

His floor mats didn't fit right and had zero grip under them, so they would slide around, even occasionally getting stuck under the pedals. No good. So I found a set of new ones that can be trimmed to fit correctly.

His stereo system was probably the worst I've ever seen/heard before. Only the front right door speaker generated sound. The left door speaker was silent, and the rears just buzzed. Here's why:

http://www.samos.org/RearSpeakers.jpg

So we picked up 2 pairs of speakers, and I sold him a nice Alpine head unit out of my 300zx. The left door speaker still didn't work though. We traced it down to one of the speaker wires going to the door, so we ran a new wire, and now it all works great. That should make the return drive to SF much better.

His battery terminals were corroded and gross, and the positive terminal actually broke when I was putting it back on. So I bought 2 new terminals and stripped and cleaned up the cables.

We also did an oil/filter change and replaced the air filter.

The only remaining item is to figure out why there is sometimes a vibration under braking. The front brakes look good. I haven't looked at the rears yet. But it only happens sometimes, so I'm thinking it may be suspension related.

Nice fixin! Bushings can make vibrations under braking, mine is slightly doing it. Lots easier than 928! I just helped my dad restore a '79 5speed 928 and then a '87 928 S4. Got the 79 for 2500$ and the s4 for 5500$. Both have about 6500$ into each after all is done. The S4 was sold on ebay for $11k a few years back. The mechanical fuel distributor was a PITA! And the 14pin connector under the hood of the s4 was all mismatched. Edited by USLiberty

Well....let the suspension rebuild begin....

When installing the WRX 20mm swaybar this last Saturday, I noticed a gaping tear in one of my steering rack bellows. $140 later and brand new Moog bellows and inner and outer tie rods are on their way from RockAuto. Hopefully next month I can afford ball joints and bushings to get the front done quickly.

The previous owner put H&R sport springs on it but the stock shocks are pretty shot. I plan to do Koni Yellow inserts for now and run them with the H&Rs for a few years. This is the same setup I have on my 5th Gen GT and love them. I already have a set of all 4 2005 WRX donor struts sitting in the garage which I picked up from a local guy for $60. The new front sway bar, and the tires and wheels I put on it a few months ago, helped a bit to make the car feel a little more solid, but reality is that 160k miles is, in my opinion, about time for new everything. So here goes.....

Very cool! I've got an '81 928 with about 200k miles on it that needs a new water pump and timing belt, but I'll likely pull the motor and do a complete tear down on it. But first I have to finish rebuilding the motor on my '96 300zx twin turbo. I've already completed transmission work, and I'm finishing up a complete engine bay overhaul and detailing. I just wish I had lots more time to work on it than I do.

Looks like ill hunt down some new sway bars too. Found a set of godspeeds front/rear from 02-07 wrx for a fair price maybe I'll make a move.

Meanwhile bday present to myself was a new battery from costco. 600+ cca sure helps compared to the weak 300ish in there before. I'll be replacing the fuel filter soon and pump, since I still get an awkward hesitation from time to time.

plugs and everything eletrical is good. After gteaser changed his I think that's the culprit for me too.

I still have the strange hesitation if I mash the throttle too hard, so the fuel pump upgrade didn't improve it. If I roll on it a little slower, it seems to be smoother, but it also seems to be a little weather/temperature dependent. I am wondering if maybe an MSD coil pack might help because my car does run rich and the extra spark could be good.

Also, on the sways, you need 02-07 "Wagon" bars, my understanding is that the sedans were a little wider. I went with the stock WRX wagon 20mm front bar and I am going to order the Whiteline 20mm Adjustable from MRT (BSR19XZ) as soon as I have funds. I remember you mentioning that the rear was a little tail happy when you autox'ed your car, so I don't want to be stuck without some adjustability if I were to do the straight 20mm.

Thats good to know Joe, I'll ask to see if they were sedan or wagon. And yes the rear came around fairly easy. Righr now since I lifted it up with the spacers im not running a rear sway at all and it appears to be handling better. Maybe thats in my head though considering how grippy dedicated snow tires are.

@monkeyposeur....I did completely removed the MAF about 2weeks ago and cleaned it being careful not to touch the element. I did use a small earswab to wipe down the plates. It has helped but holy smokes my gas mileage has taken a tumble over the last month or so.
