AZP Installs
Why the parents would buy the kid that car at 17 is beyond me. Why they would allow him to take the car out at that hour without an adult is beyond me. Why the ejected folks weren't wearing seat belts is beyond me. As for part out, I don't think there is any useable parts left. So sad, but so preventable. Mike
whitetiger
most parents are ignorant about these cars. All they see is Subaru's safety ratings. so they just buy it not knowing that kids cant handle them.
blongo804
So sad, but so preventable. Mike Very true. It's too bad and scary being that they're only 2 years younger than me. I can't imagine dying 2 years ago. RIP unparented driver and unfortunate to be there passengers.

jasejase
^ thats good and all... And i dont want to arm-chair parent. BUT, ignorance is not always an option. When picking a kids car, you need to be educated on the subject.
whitetiger
what should be done, and what is done, are often 2 different things. most people dont even know what a turbo is, let a lone what it does or means when a car has one.
jasejase
like i said, ignorance isnt always acceptable.. I hear what your saying. Rule of thumb... if there is a car that your teen driver WANTS. Thats likely the one they shouldnt have.

AZP Installs
Problem is that parents these days have no parenting skills and are pretty self centered. I grew up on Staten Island and there were more than 1 family I knew who's parents would go to Atlantic city every weekend, and leave the kids with $300 for the weekend (shows you ow old I am, that was a lot of money in the 80s) and come home Sunday night. Then they wondered why the kids ended up being screw ups. One of the reasons I don't have kids is cause my life/work keeps me too busy to do a good job at it. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. Spec B
This is so tragic - we were all young and stupid once, this kid now has to live with knowing he caused the death of his friends. I feel sorry for him and the victims family. The one's who have some splaining to do are the parents... "It’s not clear where Beer and his buddies were coming from, but they were heading westbound around 3:40 a.m. on the parkway when the Subaru suddenly roared off the highway and into some trees in Malverne, LI, police said." How can they buy him that car and how on earth did they allow their 17 year old kid to be out out anywhere at 4am with just a learner's permit? That is borderline child endangerment IMO. TheOneDoubleN
I'm pretty sure it's also illegal to be driving at night with only a learner's permit. A very similar thing occured when I was in highschool, kid got a brand new IS300 and wrapped it around a tree late at night on a hard curve after a long straight on Sunset Bl. The kid (driver) survived, the passenger was killed instantly. The surviver really did not seem all that affected in the years following the accident, but who knows what goes through someone's head after something like that. I don't care how safe you think a modern car is. Physics is a harsh mistress. The fact that the car actually managed to split in half indicates he was probably going at or over 100mph, on a damp, dark, dangerous road at 4am with a car full of kids. My condolences to the victims and their families. It sucks that those who were killed had such a reckless and woefully inconsiderate friend, I really have NO pity for Beer, he'll have to live with his mistake for the rest of his life. I would be very surprised if the families of those who were killed didn't press charges against Beer.
