Plug n Play Aux-in mod for 2005 6cd radios

After Jazzy's tip, I went Chuck Norris on the center console and was able to pull the right white clip up. That's after pushing against the black surround with a flat screwdriver. Nasty sh!t. The left clip is mangled from my last attempt, so I tried to pry it out and that didn't go as expected.

Like you said, if you're just messing with the headunit, you don't need to unplug the clips for the center console, since you can just pry out the shifter gate surround after sliding the console a tad to the back.

If you're installing the subwoofer's wire and running it down the center console, you have to. Grrrrr.

No, I didn't look at the windings, and if the label is oriented correctly (which we have to assume it is) then you are correct and the male end is the output. That's just bass ackwards though because with the RCA unit, I'm pretty sure male is the input...? Wierd eh?

PAC is lazy/cheap. Look at the 2 GLIs. They both use the same sticker! Notice that on the on the left-hand side of the 3.5, it says:

LEFT

OUTPUT

RIGHT

just like it does on the RCA, even though the 3.5 doesn't have separate wires for left and right!

I'm not sure I trust the sticker now. :(

Yea, it also says "RCA" on both. If you check out PAC's homepage, the PAC SNI-1/3.5 doesn't actually exist as a product. I think Crutchfield custom orders them from PAC and that's part of why they take so dern long to get.

Their FAQ on the SNI-1 also addresses the issue of signal loss. Like you said, I'm not sure we can trust the label for sure since this is a custom product and it's entirely possible they get them switched every now and then. Yet another reason why the RCA version is a safer choice to use...

Did your signal get any louder? I put mine in backwards like you, but I'm trying to figure out of its worth ripping apart my car again. My XM setup is reallllly quiet, and its been bugging me for awhile. :)

i still i have no idea if its backwards or not  ... i just fiddled around with it comparing every which way to plug it in.... and it sounds the same just no ticking.....

Well, guess what...this mod also works in the WRX 6CD radio. The one marked P-133 on the front, which is a Matsushita model# 86201FE210, Ref.# CQ-EF6360A.

A WRX STI owner was kind enough to try it out and take some pictures for me. I don't know what other radios this might also work in anymore, but I'm remaning reserved for the moment that this is the only one. Some install pictures are attached...as you can see, it's almost exactly the same as our Legacy/Outback radios.

Also, I've got a website up and functioning, but if you know where it is (i'm not telling yet, but most could probably figure it out) please don't place any orders on it yet. I haven't finished setting everything up and haven't tested it at all. I will probably get it completed this weekend in time for when the GLI's show up Monday. This will help alleviate the "kit" issue and you can just order what you want depending on what your setup requires.

I ordered a PAC SNI-1/3.5 from Crutchfield on Monday and I just got an email today that it shipped! That's not bad!
Once I canceled my order, it went back to "In Stock" :) I have a feeling I probably forced them to stock more than they normally would, so they should have them for awhile.

I went to your website. Cool! One small request - please add cable lengths to your descriptions.
Good call. Like I said, it's still under construction :)

As far as more products...maybe... hehe... This is still kind of a test effort. I'm not sure how deep in I want to get before I can determine if I'm headed in the right direction. I think to go any further, I'm going to need to actually start a company, get a license, etc... and then I can become a distributor for some of these places instead of buying them retail and reselling them.

Taxes, fees, blah...that does not sound like much fun, but I suppose it might just be a path to something bigger and better, so we'll see. For now, I'm still trying not to get in too deep.

I hope I am not repeating any previous posts, but has anyone tried this thing?

BTW, Jazzy, I got the board. Thanks again for your patience and hardwork! I will be installing it as soon as the GLI comes in (I too received a positive email from Crutchfield...)

Best regards,

I opened things up again today. I verified my 3.5mm PAC GLI looks as in Crutchfield's photo, meaning the male end is the output and is attached to the jazzy. I also buried a Belkin iPod dock connector in my dash, and this works much better compared to using the headphone adapter as many have said before. I get no noise of any kind using the Belkin + GLI + jazzy. The Belkin pauses the iPod automatically when shutting off the car.

I am a very happy camper!

The fact the Belkin pauses the Ipod is great thing to note....I love that feature as well!!

I'm in the middle of the install and I am pulling off the heat sink. Trouble is, there is some black adhesive strip that prevents me from doing so. Anyone have the same issue? It's getting late and this is stressing me out. Should I pull off the adhesive?

Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about the black tape, you can probably pull it off. Just make sure you don't pull anything else off in the process (like, if it's holding onto a delicate ribbon cable). I don't know if anyone else has run into tape holding this on though...I did not.

Yes, the smoky piece. I think I am going to just peel it off...
Oh that! Oh yea, I just ripped that off. The resulting gap is a great place to route the audio cable too.

Peel it off, it just covers an empty hole. It is the ideal place to run the aux cable through.

It's from a 2005 WRX STI, but I think it's the same radio in limited Outback Sport's and Imprezas (05/06). I don't know if it's been around longer than that.

Well, the site is up and running. I fixed as many quirks and bugs as I could find, but don't be suprised if you find a broken link. It is fully functional for ordering (yup, I even tested it) and the GLI's are supposed to arrive tomorrow. I'm going to allow purchases of backordered products for now so that you can put in complete orders even though I don't currently have GLI's in hand.

Obviously it needs some more "polishing" and filling out the details. I need to bring a lot of info from this thread over and integrate it into the site eventually, but it will get the job done for now.

I'm also going to leave up the links in the first post of this thread in case Murphy attacks, but here it is: http://www.jazzyengineering.com

Feedback and requests/updates/suggestions are also welcome, but rather than clutter up this thread with that, please PM or email me...or you can use the contact form on the website. Thanks :)

How many have you sold already? and how many to people not on this site?
Well, really, I've only sold thru this site up until now, so everyone has been "on this site." Tide has been generous enough to allow me to make a bit of a base of operations of this thread. (Speaking of which, I'm gunna donate to that dude again right now for making and hosting such a great site.) I've also noticed that many people who have bought a board posted first on this thread, so there's no telling how many of them were simply drawn here by google. If you google "aux in subaru", a link to this thread comes up as #1, so I'm sure that helps.

If I can get permission to post on Nasioc, that will surely change, although they aren't suck with their stereo like we are and they have a lot of catching up to do. There's about 275 successful installs so far, and except for the one guy that tried it on his WRX, they've all been on Legacys and Outbacks. Thanks to everyone else for making this project a success! :) I can assure you, I enjoy using this little device as much as everyone else and am grateful for centerpunch's initial research on this idea. I certainly never expected to build so many of them but, I'm already about due to order another batch of IC's.
