Change Your Cabin Filters!

I've had a new cabin filter waiting to go in my 06 GT for some time now, but due to the lack of the quick access door I've been postponing it a bit. Today, my friend changed the filter on his 08. He was complaining of a bad smell in the car since he bought it a few months ago. Installation was a breeze, but wow, it must be the worst one I've ever seen. The pics speak for themselves...

I change mine once a year. Might be overkill but oh well.

here in AZ its so dusty year round, I replace every year and the old ones always look nasty. this is after just one year of use on our old 2.0i impreza:

When I bought mine and went to change it, there wasn't even one in there to remove.

Now lets pretend this is an 05 with no filter from factory...

Subaru has been a utilitarian car manufacturer well past into 2000's sadly. It's no wonder my neighbor laughed and said never when I told him to get a newer outback, he's used to the super basic no thrills 90's Subaru's.

The filter only takes about 10 mins to install, the glove box comes out fairly easy.

Yes but after you take half the interior apart. There is some kind of revision that was introduced later on.

 

Center console, right half of the radio trim, the glove box and glove box part that has the owner's manual pocket all comes out.

 

Depending on when made and prior owner, there may not even be a filter in the filter tray when you pull it. Took me 3 years to find a filter that wasn't $80 and the confidence I wasn't going to break a bunch of yellow clips.

Nah, the filter is easy to replace. Just disconnect the glove box door cables and swing it down. You shold have enough room to pull out the filter tray.

my 05 did not. You can get cabin filters from rockauto, ebay, amazon - they all shouldn't cost more than $10 a piece.

Had mine changed out at the dealer when it went in for the airbag recall. Since the 05's need the dash removed to replace the airbag I told them to replace the cabin filter while they were already there. $40 for the filter.

I don't have one in mine, took it out in 2009 as I wasn't gonna take my interior apart every year. No strange smells, odors or anything
