05legacysp
Anyone build a hybrid for a 2.5i with a 255 bottom end and stock 253 top end? Saw a post on another board that suggested it was a good idea. 255 bottom end makes for stouter engine to add after market turbo. Stock 253 top end means no rewire necessary. Thoughts? fahr_side
The 255 bottom-end is not in and of itself any tougher than the 251 or 253. It just has pistons with more dish volume that yield a lower compression ratio than the n/a items. If you look in the turbo powertrain forum you'll see endless threads about broken ring lands, so it's not like the stock 255 (or 257) pistons are very tough either. JE makes a very nice forged piston for your block with an appropriate CR. You can push that as far as a 255 before anything else breaks. Worry about engine management. This is a far more critical issue to you. Oh, and before the rest pile in, go trade up to a GT. Will be cheaper and less painful in the end. 05legacysp
Thanks for the info. This motor has 170k on it so I'm just trying to do some research before the inevitable. "Buy a gt" is the most common advice I've gotten so far. But all the decent I find are $10k+ East coast swappers said they'd put an ez30d in my car for $6500. fahr_side
170k at n/a power levels is nothing. These are not n/a converted to turbo operation, it's the other way 'round. Put some fresh bearings in, bore to 1st oversize, drop the JE's in, add some head studs for good measure. Done. Youll want to pay $10K plus for a decent LGT these days At that price id swap in the H6 its pairs well with the 3.90 5MT
05legacysp
What about the 4eat? That's what I have now.
fahr_side
4EAT will stand up to just about anything. Certainly an n/a six. GEE-OTTO
What about the 4eat? That's what I have now. Fun fact the 4EAT is a great drag box! look up user Girodisc he built a H6 boosted 5MT BE Legacy is was the type of thing 2.5i-ers dreamt about
05legacysp
I'll check it out. It's just a daily driver so I'd just assume keep the 4eat if at all possible

05legacysp
That's probably the best option but the ez30 came bolted to a 4eat so I figured it was worth considering
