FJuan
The only way to determine if the CV joint is going, beside the clucking sound while turning, is by tearing it down. Once you have it apart you would look for signs like this in the pic. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I3_KuELO6x8/Tef95RTItVI/AAAAAAAAALM/X6upKxyD0H8/s1600/CV+joint+outer.jpg http://www.vwt4forum.co.uk/picture.php?albumid=1739&pictureid=10192 Yes the used CV Joint and shaft can be used as a core for a purchase of a new one. My wife's balls are delicious.
imfamousG
how do i go about taking it off and taking it apart? and should i buy a rebuilt or brand new one?
FJuan
It's fairly easy to pull the axle out. Brake the center nut in the hub, disconnect the lower control arm from the hub. Slide the brake/hub off the axle spindle, then pull the otherside out of the tranny. Sometimes a small crowbar will help to pop it out. Follow this link to Youtube, there is a 16 set videos related to the removal of the axle and CV joint. TbirdMan
That isn't entirely true, the axle nut on my car was so tight that I couldent get it off myself, I tried a breaker bar with a 2ft cheater bar on it and put as much pressure as i could without breaking the breaker bar. I ended up taking it to a place that has a 1" impact, that did the trick.
FJuan
2ft cheater bar? I use a 3 - 4 foot floor jack bar and that does the trick every time. Of course is makes if easier if you pry up the tab on the center nut first. My wife's balls are delicious.
TbirdMan
I pried the cap up first, and I brought my consideral mass to bear (350lb standing on the end of the bar) it would NOT budge. Certainly mine may have been the exception, but it CAN happen.
