What'd you do to your FIRST Gen. Subaru today?

Recommended Posts

Yesterday and today, sanded the crap outta my hood. Still have another day of work. Sanding nightmare http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/onefastlt/IMG_20130330_182750_zpsddf54ba1.jpghttp://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/onefastlt/IMG_20130330_182736_zps1de31b98.jpg

US - you'll appreciate all the hard work done in the prep phase after it's painted. Take your time and it'll look phenomenal.

Thanks for the encouragement, everytime I wonder what the hell I'm doing I just get on here and realize I'm not alone. I started playing with my timing map a little today, not storing any changes in the EMS, but getting a feeler of what helps. Ive been researching and found that adding timing before the turbo spools can improve spool up, I'll find out tomorrow when I can get it on the highway. I know its got a pretty conservative base ignition and since I'm up at elevation I shouldnt have any issues advancing the timing a bit, even with the crap 91 octane we have here. If gas prices keep rising, I might just run a 20% e85 mixture. Its supposed to be completely safe besides what the mainstream has said, as long as you have the injector headroom. Check out this site, some interesting info on running e85 http://www.alcoholcanbeagas.com/store/conversion_kits

So, the cam was seized in the bolt-on collar on the front of the head. I pulled it off, took it back to the machine shop, where it was re-honed and liberally lubed before installation. Got it back on and started the car. Drove it about 10 miles before it seized again. Not in the collar this time, but somewhere in the head itself. I can turn it very slowly, but something is jammed up. So back it goes. Wondering if I need a new cam altogether?

It also ripped the cogged roller out of the water pump and chewed the timing belt. Good times.

started to tackle my hood, can really get an idea of the hail damage I'm dealing with. http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/onefastlt/IMG_20130412_145142_zps3b7c7cd8.jpghttp://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u386/onefastlt/IMG_20130412_190237_zps22ad04a0.jpg

US - holy crap, that looks like a dump truck dropped gravel on your Subie!

A minor and brief early spring hail storm here prompted me to finally move out the remaining stuff on my side of the garage and get my Subie inside. Glad I did ... a month later, quarter size hail storm showed up.

It was an act of God, unfortunately. A dump truck would be more believable until you experience a a high country arizona monsoon that happens to turn into hail when its still 50° out. I redid almost the whole roof again and I'm still not happy with it. I saw an episode of overhaulin where chip foose used about a quart of body filler and a yardstick to apply a thick layer over the whole roof at once. I may have to start from scratch and use that method. Still debating whether or not to be that anal because the flat white will hide minor flaws pretty well. On another note, I finally got the plasti-dip paint I ordered in flat black. Its like a latex paint, and you can peel it off when you want it off, ppl are painting theyrr whole cars with this stuff, easier and cheaper than wrapping the car with vinyl Going to do the wheels this weekend,

Now just wating on some time to take the car to a friend of mine and take care of the bodywork and put together a 2 1/2 inch exhaust system

I fixed a coolant leak to the turbo by using hose clamps instead of the spring clips. I also cleaned the MAF and found the glue I used to attach one of the plastic nipples to the air box had come loose and had a leak. I was pinched for time, so I used some 5 min epoxy to put it back together. I need to gather some courage and do the coffee cup mod.

I went to the Junkyard and got some extra screws for the air box. I epoxied one of the nuts in place to the back of it. I also discovered the earlier mentioned nipple fix had failed so I tried it again with more epoxy. I also found some bolts to secure the bottom of the back seat and screws for my license plates.

Pulled the motor from the flea-bag and it looks pretty terrible under there, I think oil was coming out of that motor on every single seal and gasket on it, I couldn't even see the camshaft support plate in the back of the block.

I didn't notice when I bought the car that the clutch cable was rigged up with a #13 shallow socket as a spacer...lol

Removing it seemed easier than my 2nd gen sedan, though that car is auto.

Well, last night I was somewhat busy tinkering...

Picked up a pass. side wheel well liner, passenger side visor, dome light lens, radio surround bezel, inside mirror trim pieces (Those little triangle bits), timing belt covers, and even the little latch piece for the hood prop rod. Since all of these things were either broken or missing thanks to the previous owner

Then went about installing everything. Removed the snorkus box from the pass. wheel well before installing the fender liner because it was broken and flopping around, and I like the increase in intake noise :p Re adjusted the panel gap on the pass. side fender since it was all out of whack as well.

Also pulled the gauge cluster to hook the Forester compass/temp/barometer/altimeter gauge pack speed sensor wire up, only to realize that these old Leggies have a mecahnical speedometer with a cable...

:ohhh: Completely didn't realize that... Oh well, I'll have to read through the FSM some more and see if there is any sort of electronic speed signal anywhere on that car, if not I'll have to settle for not having it :icon_cry:

You can take the electronic speed sensor off a forester tranny and install it in yours. I swapped a wrx trans with the electronic speed sensor and was able to bolt the mechanical sensor from my turbo legacy gauge cluster. I know it physically swaps out but I am not sure on the wiring, if it runs straight to the gauges it should work. The abs ecu only uses wheel speed for the abs system, and it uses abs sensors for that.

Theres no ABS so I dont think that I'll be able to get a signal there, I also pulled the instrument cluster and there didn't seem to be a vehicles speed signal. I did notice that there are two Vehicle speed signals coming out of the TCU so I'll try those, if either of them dont work then I'll try the VSS coming from the ECU... If anything I'll figure it out.

Also, been going wild with the body work. Previous owner did a number on it, lots of dents and just slapped flat black paint and bondo right on top of the original paint, which looks like it was really nice under where the flat black flaked off, it was dark metallic grey. Also was in a bit of a fender bender, and I've been working on straightening that out as well.

Hood stripped down...

Drivers door partially stripped, alot of the bondo work had already shipped off leaving behind bare metal to rust...

Rear bumper pulled off to help strip and straighten...

Still lots of work ahead...

Haha, luckily there is next to no rust anywhere else. Coming from Colorado its extremely solid. And yeah, I realized last minute we didnt have any newspaper lying around to mask with so I improvised
