Koni/Epic or Bilstein HD/Epic?

I've been trying to make a decision for 2 months. As far as my car being lowered epic springs give me exactly what I'm looking for. Install of the Koni's look like a pain in the arse and may cost more (in labor) and take longer for a shop to do. I've seen a lot of comments on the Koni/Epic combo but what about the Bilstein/Epic combo? Anyone have or been in a car with this set up?

Keep in mind I have a 2.5i and do 90% city driving in the Boston area dodging bombed out roads all day. Only suspension mods I've had so far are a whiteline rear sway and end links. Appreciate any feedback

i am doing the same research. i think i am going with the konis and the h&r. i do all the work myself. i live in r.i. so i feel ya on the road situations. ill let you know how mine come out.

What are you running for tires? This is another thing I should have looked into before purchasing. I have yokohama advan envigors 205/50/R17.. Not sure if 215 or something with more sidewall would help the ride. The rear sway helped a lot so far. I'm coming off a Jeep so every bump feels like a pothole and every pothole is like a sink hole. I just need a better set up then the OEM set up, even if it is a 2.5i. Ride quality and handling means more to me then HP with gas at 4/gallon and going up.

If I didn't have an Outback, I probably would have gone with Koni's.

I'm immensely happy with my Bilstein/Pink combo, though.

^^ I am also going with the Koni/HR combo.

The install looked kinda crucial at first, but after reading the well written write up and watching a couple utube vids it doesnt seem that bad...I would probably tackle it over a weekend at most

I plan to snag the Koni fronts now while theyre on sale and save up a bit and get the rears soon after..

Still trying to save a bit more to get my wheels and tires :(

For this fact alone I would get the Konis. Lifetime warranty... :)

Just finished my first day with the Koni / Epic combo, I love it. Was running stock springs and shuts with Perrin 22 mm bars front and back, kart boy end links, the strut/spring combo transforms the car. Buttoned down, flat in the corners, sticks like crazy. Its added 10-15 MPH to most corners, with no lack of composure. Wish I'd done it 2 years ago...

I really like the adjustability for NE roads, have settled on 3/4 turn off full soft front and rear for the moment. Full soft was good for bumps, gave up handling, 50/50 was too harsh. Springs definitely penalize the ride a bit, but I'm sold that its worth it.

i am undecided about tires right now. to let you know sidewall size is determined by the second number. first is the width of the tread side wall to sidewall.

My shocks just suk then haha... My tires have an awesome grip, not bad in the winter but they hold nice when I feel like breaking the speed limit daily. After the Koni/Epic's I think my last 2 mods will be rotors and calipers when they go. I'm not even going to bother with rims. Looks nice but I rather keep it simple and stay under the radar on the road. Too much flair brings too much attention.

Compared to stock how would you say it penalizes the ride? Just curious as I've heard that from a few others, if its bad would it be better just to keep the OEM springs with the Koni's?

Just with the new rear sway 20mm, endlinks, and front strut bar (mostly aesthetic) the car handles like a new car in corners and switching lanes quickly curious to see how much more it will tighten up with the strut/spring mod.

Suscribe. I have Koni at home waiting to be installed and looking at Epic or H&R springs. People seem to be happy with both but I cant decide.

H&R are stiffer but not as much drop as the Epics. I would go for the H&R for performance and Epic for comfort. Let us know if we can provide either set for you and/or install.

Thanks Mike. I thought that HR had more drop. Since its my DD and I commute on some crappy roads I should probably go Epic. Reading a lot about the squeak tho which has me scared. Did you guys ever come up with a solution for it or did Epic

I could always stick with my Ralliteks which have under 15k miles. Just figured I'd put fresh springs on since Im doing the work (myself).

Stick with the ralliteks then. I like those a great deal! 15k is nothing on springs (They usually last a lifetime).

Mike,

Any thoughts on Koni's with Ion springs for my 2005 family wagon? The roads are getting really crappy up here in the PNW. I do travel the occasional forest service road plus lots of snow driving in the winter. I currently have the ion sprins paired with Bilstein HD and find them a tad hard on some bumps.

Cheers,

Mike

Hard call, i believe you should be able to dial the konis in a bit softer on the soft side than the HDs, so that may help, but may not help enough in your particular situation. If the HDs are shot or you have an opportunity to sell them, then i would give the Konis a shot for sure.
